Satellite Radio Stock Manipulation
April 30, 2006 You will often here the terms "stock manipulation" or the "market makers are manipulating" tossed around. Often, people look at this and think that it is just an investor with a case of sour grapes after a bad day with an equity. THINK AGAIN Stock manipulation is a major part of the stock market. It happens almost all of the time. There already exist some very compelling stories related to the subject. Overstock.com Was the subject of a news show piece very recently. In fact, at one point in time there were more shares short on the stock than the float!!!!! If you ever get a chance, look at Level 2 stock quotes. You can see the bid as well as the ask, and often can see some puzzling things happening. Watch level two on SIRI or XM, and look at what happens just before close on some days. You can see the stock pop or drop in a matter of minutes, and it happens with both big trades as well as small trades. Watch the equity during the middle of the day as it approaches a certain price level, and watch what happens to take the stock down off of that level. The term "naked shorts" has had a lot of press lately. There is one company that is now doing something about it. An SSG reader forwarded this story to me, and I felt compelled to pass it along to you. Stock manipulation is an issue that we all have to contend with, and seeing and understanding the methods to fight it can help investors be better aware of the issue. Rather than post the whole story here, I think that it is important to let SSG readers check out this blog, and perhaps even bookmark it as a regular reading stop. You can read a very interesting story by clicking here. The link to this write up is http://tinyurl.com/oxuws4/30/2006 12:09:00 AM

ABC Testing On Line Video
April 28, 2006 Rest assured that there will be many sectors interested in ABC's on line video offerings, and satellite radio will likely be one sector keeping a close eye things. Many companies are exploring how to deliver content to audiences that goes beyond the living room television set. ABC will be rolling out on line versions of popular television shows May 1st, and will run the service through June. Initial studies indicate that 1 out of 4 people express interest in viewing their favorite shows on line. One of the major concerns settles around advertising. The ABC service will not allow viewers to skip ads. This did have an impact on the level of interest in the service, but the numbers still seem to support the endeavor. The key items that will interest those that follow the satellite radio equities is just how many people would utilize such a service, and where, if at all, does advertising revenue fit in. Sirius and XM will have to invest a lot of capital into video services, and will also need to commit bandwidth. Bandwidth is not an endless commodity, and the satellite radio companies need to be sure that they are getting a return on their investment of dollars and bandwidth. As video becomes more widely available, the competitive landscape could play a major role in how the satellite radio companies roll out the services. Partnerships may be necessary simply to defray costs, and lock up content. You can read the AdAge article by clicking here. The link to this write up is http://tinyurl.com/jmqmp4/28/2006 02:34:00 PM

FCC Investigates XM
April 27, 2006 XM satellite Radio informed investors today of a letter that they received from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding "emissions" from the SKYFI2 satellite radio receiver. In an 8k filed with the SEC XM stated the following: In the ordinary course of business, we become aware from time to time of claims, potential claims or investigations, or may become party to legal proceedings arising out of various matters, such as contract matters, employment related matters, issues relating to our repeater network, product liability issues, copyright, patent, trademark or other intellectual property matters and other federal regulatory matters.
On April 25, 2006, we received a letter from the Federal Communications Commission stating that its Office of Engineering and Technology Laboratory has tested the Delphi XM SKYFi2 radio and has determined that its transmitter is not in compliance with the applicable emission limits. The letter seeks information from us regarding the testing, emissions and other matters relating to this radio. We are conducting an internal review, and anticipate responding to the letter shortly and cooperating fully.
Also on April 25, 2006, we received a letter from the Federal Trade Commission stating that they are conducting an inquiry into whether our activities are in compliance with various acts, including the FTC Act, the Telemarketing Sales Rule, the Truth in Lending Act and the CAN-SPAM Act. This letter requests information about a variety of our marketing activities, including free trial periods, rebates, telemarketing activities, billing and customer complaints. We are conducting an internal review of these matters, and anticipate responding to the letter shortly and cooperating fully with this investigation. XM believes that it is too early in the process to determine the significance, if any, of these matters to our business, consolidated results of operations or financial position. It is our understanding that this type of inquiry from the FCC is not uncommon. The FCC sometimes conducts test that have results that do not match the data provided by the testing company when the units receive their initial FCC approval. Should the FCC's test prove that a device does not meet standards, a recall is still rather unlikely. Penalties and fines seem to be the "norm" with regards to this type of issue rather than a mass recall. As XM stated in their 8k, they will respond to the FCC inquiry accordingly, and they intend to comply with all regulations. Many may be wondering if this issue will spill over into other units, or to Sirius. This may or may not happen. Only the FCC knows this answer. the link to this write up is http://tinyurl.com/oc6rd4/27/2006 09:58:00 PM

FTC Investigating XM
April 27, 2006 XM satellite Radio seems to be in a bit of hot water with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). for those that are not familiar, the FTC is a government agency charged with protecting the American consumer. XM did not shed much light on the reason for the FTC complaint, but some speculation has already made the rounds. XM said it received a letter from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission on April 25 stating that they were looking into whether XM's activities comply with various rules, including the Telemarketing Sales Rule and the Truth in Lending Act. XM executives stated that it was a "pretty general inquiry" and that the company would soon contact the agency to inquire about their concerns. the 8k filed by XM with the SEC stated the following: In the ordinary course of business, we become aware from time to time of claims, potential claims or investigations, or may become party to legal proceedings arising out of various matters, such as contract matters, employment related matters, issues relating to our repeater network, product liability issues, copyright, patent, trademark or other intellectual property matters and other federal regulatory matters.

XM believes that it is too early in the process to determine the significance, if any, of these matters to our business, consolidated results of operations or financial position. The most common thread of the speculation is that initial complaints were centered around the practice of trying to sign OEM promotional subscribers to the XM service. This speculation seems well placed given that XM stated that the FTC is interested in XM's telemarketing practices. What specific violations are alleged are as yet unknown, but may include techniques, or even telemarketing to individuals on the National Do Not Call Registry. It does appear that the FTC is requesting information that would pertain to several aspects of XM's marketing practices. At this point it is to early to tell what the repercussions may be, but the potential for penalties and fines does exist. The link for this write up is http://tinyurl.com/mjq694/27/2006 09:30:00 PM

XM Conference Call Wrap Up
April 27, 2006 XM has conducted their call, and the street is now aware of the results. XM missed street consensus of a loss of 53 cents per share. XM posted a loss of 62 cents per share. XM did beat revenue expectations by about 6.5 million dollars. SUBSCRIBERSXM posted NET subscriber gains of 568,902. This brought their total subscriber base to 6,501,859 subscribers. This leaves XM needing 2,500,000 subscribers to meet their stated guidance of 9,000,000 subscribers by the end of 2006. XMÂs retail channel brought in 303,622 subscribers. Of that retail base, 167,180 (or 55%) came in the ÂFriends and Family program. The family plan now accounts for 20% of XMÂs overall subscriber base. This is virtually unchanged from Q4. Data subscribers made up 22,000 of the retail subscribers. XMÂs OEM channel saw substantial growth, and reported 272,024 NET subscribers. OEM conversion rate is 54%. XMÂs Rental channel saw a decrease of 6,744 subscribers. CHURN
XM reported a churn rate of 1.64%. It should be noted that XMÂs churn does not include those who do not keep the service after the promotional period expires. Overall XM had 450,598 deactivations in the first quarter SUBSCRIBER ACQUISITION COSTS
XM reported improvement in this sector over the fourth quarter. Q1 SAC was $62, while Q4 was at $89. The improvement is nice, but still has not come back to pre Q4 levels. COST PER GROSS ADDITION
XM again improved this metric over Q4. In Q4 the CPGA was $141. The first quarter brought this cost down to $94. XM stated that thcommittedommited to keeping CPGA under 4100 for the full year of 2006. REFINANCINGAs reported earlier by SSG, the refinancing helps XMÂs cash flow position substantially. XM did note that they will incur a $75,000,000 non-cash expense in Q2 relating to the financing. Most analysts should be picking this up in their projections in the coming days. AVERAGE REVENUE PER UNIT
XM reported ARPU of above $10.00 for the first time. ARPU for Q1 came in at $10.07. This is up from $9.85 cents in Q4 2005. An increase in ARPU is very nice to see from XM. XM expects ARPU to stay above $10.00 for all of 2006. WCS SPECTRUM
XM did not offer any new information on the WCS Spectrum SSG feels that uncertainty surrounding this spectrum still acts as a weight on this equity. This is not to say that the WCS acquisition is bad. SSG simply feels that the lack of information regarding this bandwidth remains as a question mark in the minds of many on the street. REVENUE
XM reiterated subscriber revenue of $860,000,000 for 2006 CASH FLOW BREAK EVEN
XM stated that they will not be at cash flow break even this year. They did stress that they will have Positive Operational Cash flow in the fourth quarter of 2006, and expect to maintain that status throughout 2007. XM stated that due to expenses related to the XM-5 satellite that true CFBE is a second half of 2007 event. Overall, the quarter was good forreiteratedteratted guidances that they had previously stated, and offered a positive outlook for 2006. The call was somewhat dampened by the FCC probe and the FTC probe, both of which XM felt should be brought to the attention of investors. XM stated that they intend to cooperate with the agencies, and supply wdocumentationantation that the agencies are requesting. I would have preferred to have some more detail on the WCS spectrum, but it appears that it is not yet in the cards. the link to this write up is http://tinyurl.com/z9lmc4/27/2006 03:25:00 PM

Sirius Gets Scandanavian
April 27, 2006 Sirius satellite Radio has announced the launch of a Scandanavian radio show. The show will air in channel 18 The Spectrum. Nordic Rox will be produced under the creative guidance of Per Gessle, one of the world's most successful songwriters, producers and musicians. As a member of the band Roxette and other performing bands, Gessle has sold 45 million albums worldwide and written dozens of songs that have been blockbusters on European and American radio, including "It Must Have Been Love," which has been aired more than 4 million times on US radio, according to BMI, and is one of Roxette's four No. 1 US singles. The program will be hosted and programmed by Radio Stockholm on-air personality Viktor Petrovski, a prominent figure in the Swedish music scene. Also contributing to the program will be the lead singer of The Hives, Howlin' Pelle Almqvist, and highly respected ABBA historian Carl Magnus Palm (on behalf of ABBA's Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus). The first episode of Nordic Rox will be broadcast on SIRIUS channel 18, The Spectrum, this Sunday, April 30 from 8 pm to 11 pm ET. "The wave of high-quality bands coming out of Sweden today rivals anything since the big UK music movements," said Scott Greenstein, SIRIUS President of Entertainment and Sports. "The launch of Nordic Rox, together with our recent addition of BBC's Radio 1 channel, further establishes SIRIUS as the leader in discovery of new popular music around the world." Gessle said, "I'm very honoured to be part of presenting Swedish and Scandinavian music outside our borders. The music scene in Sweden is certainly very creative and it will be a pleasure to present the best of it to the listeners of SIRIUS Satellite Radio. Pump up the volume!" Nordic Rox will place a spotlight on the quality and depth of Scandinavian artists and music, which have never been exposed in this manner in the US. The show will also be the first place in the US to hear exciting new music emanating from Sweden and Scandinavian countries. Historically, Sweden is the third largest exporter of music, after the US and Great Britain. It is a creative hotbed for musicians, songwriters, producers and technicians that, since the 1970s, have significantly contributed to the global pop music community. The success of the blockbuster musical Mamma Mia! has proven the enduring popularity of Swedish hitmakers ABBA's music. Scandinavian music producers Max Martin (Britney Spears, Bon Jovi, Kelly Clarkson), Anders Bagge (Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson) and Tore Johansson (The Cardigans, Franz Ferdinand), among others, are responsible for many US hits, as well as the worldwide "Crazy Frog" phenomenon. Nordic Rox will expand upon this success by showcasing established as well as up-and-coming Swedish and Scandinavian artists, ranging from ABBA, Roxette, Ace of Base, and Cardigans to The Hives and other current artists such as The Ark, Whyte Seeds, The Soundtrack of Our Lives, The Sounds, Turbonegro, Sahara Hotnights, The Hellacopters, Madrugada, H.I.M. and many others. XM In The News
April 27, 2006 XM satellite Radio reports earnings today, but the wires have already been busy with several reports regarding the satellite radio company. Satellite Standard Group will listen to the call today, and provide our re-cap. At this point it is prudent to look at some of the basics as the have been filed. The street was expecting a loss of about 53 cents per share. XM missed this number and posted a loss of 60 cents per share. Revenue beat the streets expectations $201,500,000 by about 6.5 million. XM posted revenue of $208,000,000 SSG had noted that it was very important that XM bring their expenses into line While the loss was bigger than expected, XM did bring down SAC down to $62. This figure is still above the lower numbers of early 2005, but does show an improvement over the fourth quarter. In other news, it appears that the FCC may have issues with the SKYFI 2 satellite radio, and that the FTC may have issues with XM’s marketing practices. It appears that probes into both issues have been launched by the agencies. Early trading of XM shares has not been pretty. It is unclear what the street is taking the biggest exception to, but it is clear that some, or all of the news is not being well received. At this point it boils down to Hugh Panero, and the presentation he will give in about 30 minutes. As stated, SSG will be offering post conference call follow-up this afternoon. A Call To Satellite Radio Fans
April 26, 2006 Satellite Standard Group through an item caught by the guys at Sirius Fan Network recently reported about a bill that sseks to have fees paid to record companies and artists for downloaded services. In theory, this request seems reasonable. However, the legislation that has been proposed is not as "fair and balanced" as the Senators would have you believe. The text below is from Senetor Feinstein's site. You can view it here: Senators Feinstein, Graham Introduce Legislation to Require Cable, Internet, Satellite Music Broadcasters to Protect Digital Music, Allow Consumers to Continue to Record, Replay Programming April 25, 2006Washington, DC – U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) introduced legislation today to require cable, satellite and Internet music providers to protect music they broadcast while at the same time allowing consumers to continue to record and replay programming. The Feinstein-Graham “PERFORM Act” or the “Platform Equality and Remedies for Rights Holders in Music Act of 2006” would require satellite, cable and Internet broadcasters to pay fair market value for the performance of digital music. Additionally, the bill would require the use of readily available and cost-effective technological means to prevent music theft. As such, the PERFORM Act would help strike a balance between the promotion of technological advances in digital music delivery systems and the protection of and fair compensation for the intellectual property of musicians. “The birth of the digital music place has been a boon for businesses and consumers. However, these new technologies and business models have become so advanced that the clear lines between a listening service and a distribution service have been blurred,” Senator Feinstein said. “I believe that the PERFORM Act would help strike a balance between fostering the development of new technologies and ensuring that songwriters and performers continue to be fairly compensated for their works. This legislation is a good first step forward in addressing a real problem that is occurring in the music industry.” “I believe this bill does a good job of balancing innovation and technology for consumers, with fair rules for creators,” said Senator Graham. “I want new services to continue to be made available on different platforms. But the rules need to be fair for everyone – for the creators of the music who deserve to get paid when someone keeps a song, for the platform providers who deliver the music to the consumer regardless of whether it is Internet radio, satellite radio, or traditional radio, and especially for the consumer.” A hearing on the future of the digital radio industry will be held by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, April 26 at 9:30 A.M. Senators Feinstein and Graham are members of the Committee. Background Historically, a radio service simply allowed music to be performed and listened to by an audience. However, with the advent of new music services, the line between passive listening performances and reproduction and distribution has been blurred. Recently, some services that offer digital transmissions have been exploring new technologies that would allow consumers to record, manipulate, and collect personalized music play-lists off their radio-like services instead of buying a CD or a downloaded song. Senators Feinstein and Graham believe that these new forms of music delivery systems are beneficial for the consumer and should be promoted. They also believe, however, that as these new systems are developed, artists and songwriters must also be fairly compensated for their works. The Feinstein-Graham PERFORM Act would: 1. Create Rate Parity – all cable, satellite, and internet companies should be subject to the same rates (these companies, covered by the government license created in Section 114 of the Copyright Act, would be required to pay a “fair market value” for the reproduction and copying of digital music.)2. Establish Content Protection – distinguishing between the right to perform and the right to distribute (all companies would be required to use reasonably available and economically feasible technology to prevent music theft. In addition, a company may not provide a recording device to a customer that would allow him or her to record and reproduce music without paying a reproduction royalty.) For example, if a listener chooses to automatically record a news station every morning at 9:00; a jazz station every afternoon at 2:00; a blues station every Friday at 3:00; and a talk radio show every Saturday at 4:00; that would be allowable. In addition, that listener could then use their recording device to move these programs so that each program of the same genre are back to back. What a listener cannot do is set a recording device to find all the Frank Sinatra songs being played on the radio-service and only record those songs. By making these distinctions, this bill supports new business models and technologies without harming the songwriters and performers in the process. The bill also contains language to make sure that consumers’ current recording habits are not inhibited. Therefore, any recording the consumer chooses to do manually will still be allowed. However, the PERFORM Act wouldnot: 1. Apply to Over the Air Broadcasting – the only application to broadcasters would be if they were to act as webcasters and simulcast their programs over the Internet, in which case they would be treated the same as all other Internet radio providers.2. Inhibit Technological Advances – the bill would require cable, Internet and satellite providers to use reasonably available technology to protect the music, IF they want to enjoy the benefit of a government license. If, however, a company wants to use new technologies beyond the scope of a government license then they must go to the record companies directly to negotiate a licensing agreement through the market.3. Be Discriminatory – under current law some businesses are required to pay higher licensing rates than others even though they provide essentially the same services. In addition, if a new satellite company were to be formed today they would be required to pay a higher rate than the current two companies in the market – that is not fair. Instead this bill would establish the same rates for all companies. Here at SSG, we disagree with senators Feinstein and Graham. We do not see this as legislation that creates a "level playing field". The specific exclusion of over the air broadcasts gives a virtual free pass to FM radio and their project for HD radio. There already exists, today, devices that enable listeners to capure songs directly off of FM radio. The emergence of HD radio will inspire more devices to be created, yet FM radio and HD radio seem to be getting a free pass. Should this bill pass, the playing field will definitely not be level. Legislation of this type will not help the perceived problem because it lacks forsight. Further, the government should not need further to legislate an issue that has existing laws in place. Organizations such as the RIAA currently do not collect any fees from AM and FM radio. They do collect fees from satellite radio. Sirius and XM have been negotiating with the record companies and artist organizations independent of this legislation. While the bill would encompass many other aspects of audio reception such as the internet, it leaves FM, AM, and HD Radio to have free reign. What can be done about this bill? An internet petition seems like a viable platform to express opinion, but to be frank, will not really work. Only a hand written letter from constituants, and a personal telephone call seem to get the attention of legislators these days. If someone is concerned enough to pen a letter, they must be passionate about the issue. Well, fans of satellite radio are indeed a passionate bunch, and SSG encourages those fans to take action. Those that are concerned can find the contact information for their senetor here. Fans of satellite radio can and should express their opinions regarding this legislation. The link to this write up is http://tinyurl.com/o8nm54/26/2006 10:54:00 PM

Opie and Anthony on CBS
April 26, 2006 Some may feel that this write up is in bias, but let me assure you that it is not. Today on my commute I tuned into WBCN FM in Boston to hear how the CBS version of the Opie and Anthony sounded. I found it nearly unlistenable.......wait, don't get in a dander.......I found it difficult to listen to because of the commercial load. It seemed like 20 minutes of content followed by 15 minutes of advertising in a pattern that continued throughout the drive. It was the format that I took exception with. Opie and Anthony have talent, and do put on a good show, but this format seems to be "smothering" to me. Perhaps I have been spoiled by satellite radio for to long now. Another thing I found very interesting was the content of the commercials. Every commercial break had an ad featuring HD Radio. As those that follow satellite radio know, HD (in the minds of some) will be more competitive with SDARS than the current FM format. I have no personal knowledge of how the XM version of the sounded. Checking on some message boards, it would appear that old bits were played while CBS wrapped up their longer commercial sets. I saw comments of XM subscribers that are unhappy with the change, and some that feel that the product they pay a monthly service fee for is being watered down. This article is not looking at the business side of the deal. I am speaking only about the consumer side of the deal. I can see why an Opie and Anthony fan that is an XM subscriber could be frustrated. In all fairness, the concept here is brand new, and hopefully the "kinks" will be ironed out. Only time will tell if consumers will warm up to the idea. From my perspective, the CBS format is not compelling enough to draw me away from listening to satellite, and at the same time is not compelling enough to sell me on it either. Wal Mart FLW to Increase Awareness
April 26, 2006 Satellite Standard Group likes to keep readers informed in many things, and this FLW press release does have an impact on Sirius Satellite Radio. For those unaware, Sirius is an official sponsor of FLW. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WAL-MART FLW TOUR MOVING WEIGH-INS, FAMILY FUN ZONES TO PUBLIC VENUES FOR 2007. Move will accommodate record-setting crowds, increased sponsor presenceBENTON, Ky. (April 26, 2006) - With 56 existing sponsors and a growing list of prospective sponsors waiting for the opportunity to tap into an enthusiast fan base of 55 million anglers in the United States, the move was inevitable. Beginning in 2007, FLW Outdoors will hold its familiar Wal-Mart FLW Tour Family Fun Zones and two-day, final-round weigh-ins in public venues. The move will accommodate the FLW Tour's record-setting crowds, which have topped 10,000 spectators during a single weigh-in, and allow more room for a growing list of sponsor exhibits by many of the nation's leading brand names. Currently held in the parking lots of host Wal-Mart stores, the present Family Fun Zone and accompanying weigh-in tent covers approximately 68,000 square feet. In 2007, the Family Fun Zone will range from 100,000 to 150,000 square feet depending on the local facilities and market. "This is the next logical step in our continued growth," said FLW Outdoors Chairman Irwin L. Jacobs. "Our Wal-Mart FLW Tour weigh-ins and Family Fun Zones have grown so large, and are attracting such huge crowds, that we have started to overwhelm our host stores. While we clearly drive store visits and sales, it also became clear that, from a parking and logistics standpoint, the average Wal-Mart parking lot will no longer accommodate our tremendous growth." FLW Outdoors' move to public venues will not only allow additional growth potential, it will also allow all Wal-Mart stores in a given market to participate in tournament festivities and share in the economic impact that the FLW Tour generates in the markets it visits. "Instead of one store reaping all of the benefits from an FLW Tour stop, all stores in the markets we visit will benefit from hosting angler seminars and other promotional activities onsite while also participating in off-site Family Fun Zone activities designed to drive fishing fans back into the stores following our tournaments," Jacobs said. "This is a perfect opportunity for Wal-Mart and our other sponsors to reach out to new customers. It's also the perfect opportunity to take our sport to the next level." In addition to every regular season FLW Tour stop and the Forrest Wood Cup, the Stren Series Championship, Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League All-American, Wal-Mart FLW Walleye Tour Championship and The Bass Federation National Championship will be held in public venues. Opening round weigh-ins for regular season FLW Tour events will remain lakeside. "The move to public venues will further enhance the spectator experience and allow even more people to experience and follow our sport," Jacobs said. "Today our television show is available in 80 million households throughout the United States and 350 million households internationally, our Web site produces more than 5.5 million page views per month, and tournament participation is at an all-time high. We have also revamped our magazine and have some great momentum building there along with some exciting new promotions that will be introduced soon. We are thrilled to continue our leadership role in growing the sport of tournament fishing." Named after the legendary founder of Ranger Boats, Forrest L. Wood, FLW Outdoors administers the Wal-Mart FLW Tour, Wal-Mart FLW Series, Stren Series, Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League, Wal-Mart Texas Tournament Trail, Stratos Owners' Tournament Trail, Wal-Mart FLW Walleye Tour, Wal-Mart FLW Walleye League, Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Tour, Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Series and Wal-Mart FLW Redfish Series. These circuits offer combined purses exceeding $36.9 million through 241 events in 2006. FLW Outdoors also recently announced the addition of a striped bass circuit, which will debut this summer. For more information about FLW Outdoors and its tournament programs, visit FLWOutdoors.com or call (270) 252-1000. Wal-Mart and many of America's largest and most respected companies support FLW Outdoors and its tournament trails. Wal-Mart signed on as an FLW Outdoors sponsor in 1997 and today is the world's leading supporter of tournament fishing. For more information about Wal-Mart, visit Wal-Mart.com. Sirius Sportster SP4-TK1 Released
April 25th, 2006 As reported first by Orbitcast, the new Sportster Replay has arrived on Crutchfield's website. There is currently no ship date listed, but one would think/hope it's coming soon, perhaps in time for Father's Day. Basic features include the 44 minute replay buffer, a car kit, and a wireless remote. This unit will sell for $169.99. Crutchfield is also offering the SUPV1 car kit and the SUPH1 home kit for $49.99 each. No boombox is available on Crutchfield's site at this time, but we assume the existing Sirius Sportster Boombox will not work due to a complete redesign of the device, as well as a new set of car and home docks. This unit does not have the color screen that is outlined in GSI and SatelliteStandard's artist renderings. For more information: Click Here (Via Crutchfield) You can win a free Starmate reply. Bear Sterns Outlook on XM
April 25, 2006 Bear Sterns has issued an outlook on XM satellite radio prior to their call scheduled for Thursday April 27, 2006. Satellite Standard Group outlined our Q1 Confrence Call Outlook in a recent article here . BearSterns is looking at a few key metrics from XM in the call 1Q06 PREVIEWXM has already reported the key net sub add metric for the quarter at 568k, which was marginally lower than our revised 574k estimate. We are projecting total revenues of $200 mn (in line with previous estimates), EBITDA of $(70) mn (better than previous expectations primarily due to improved view on SAC and CPGA levels), and diluted EPS of $(0.52).
SSG notes that the Bear Sterns estimates fall in line fairly close with the streets averages. O&A SHARING MAY BE POSITIVE IN OUR VIEW.One of the reasons for XM to enter into the agreement may be to stem the migration of undecided listeners to the Sirius platform especially since Stern's replacements on terrestrial radio haven't been as successful in attracting and retaining audience share. In addition, XM likely is getting share of ad revenues and CBS may be bearing some costs.
SSG notes that this subject will likely get some comment durring the call, and certainly will be one of the questions from an analyst. SSG wrote a piece about CBS and XM here
DEBT REFI STRETCHES MATURITIES. In aggregate, XM made an offer to tender up to $450 mn of debt and prepay $240 mn to GM, and raised $800 mn in debt and a $250 mn credit facility that have extended debt maturities till 2013/2014 from 2009/2010 as well as alleviated liquidity concerns.
SSG covered this issue in detail in this article. Now that the deal has been finalized before the call, look for XM to discuss it during the call.
GM PREPAYMENT SUGGESTS SUFFICIENT LIQUIDITYIn addition to reducing the total amount that XM is required to pay to GM, this transaction further substantiates that XM does not foresee liquidity issues as far as the current business plan is concerned.
INVESTMENT OIPINION Given the risk-reward at current levels, we think shares remain attractive for the patient investors. Note, however, that the stock remains catalyst-driven and the market will be looking for consistent execution on investor expectations for a sustained rally
SSG agrees with this sentiment. We commented on April 20th that XM needs to have a convincing call and illustrate that they have corrected spending issues. They also need to offer solid guidance that the street can embrace. In our opinion if XM hits the numbers that the street is looking for, the response to the call should be positive.

Martha Says NO To Sears
April 25, 2006 Satellite Standard group previously covered a story relating to Martha Stewart, her new deal with Macy's, and her current deal with K-Mart/Sears. You can read that story here. Today, Marketwatch.com is reporting here that we should not expect to see Martha Stewarts line in Sears stores. "Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Chief Executive Susan Lyne refused to reveal any details of the company's recent home-goods partnership with Macy's Department Stores, but told analysts on the first-quarter earnings call that there will not be any Martha Stewart products in Sears Roebuck stores. Eddie Lampert, chief executive of Sears Holdings Corp., had hoped he could expand the Everyday Living brand, now exclusive to Kmart stores, into the Sears stores. But the Macy's deal apparently trumped that. "We're not going to comment on any of the specific terms of our Macy's deal but I think you can assume we will not be at Sears," Lyne said. It would appear that Martha is not only expanding her brand but is also taking it more upscale. You can win a free Starmate reply. CBS In The Mobile Video Business
April 25, 2006 Those that have followed Sirius and XM for any length of time are well aware of the intention of these services to get into the video business. Both companies have demonstrated video capabilities at the Consumer Electronics Show for the past three years, but as yet neither has delivered a video product to their subscribers. Sirius and XM now seem to be much closer to implementing the video aspect of their business plans. Most now consider that Sirius and XM will both be rolling out video within the next nine months. The scope and pricing of the video roll out is still not known, but video on the go does seem to be a sector that is gaining traction. Today Susan Kalla of Caris & Company, a widely known and quoted analyst, issued research notes on CBS Corporations venture into the sector through Verizon's V Cast service. Kalla notes in her piece: "CBS began distributing news clips and celebrity alerts on Verizon (VZ, NR) Wireless for cell phones in late February for $.99 - $3.99 per month. CBS News is streaming video news segments produced exclusively for mobile phones on Verizon's V CAST service. We expect revenues of about $5 M in 2006. We assume popular programming from CBS and from Viacom, like Sponge Bob Square Pants will also migrate to the tiny screen. We attribute the slow rollout of programs to phones and the internet to difficulties in developing pricing models that optimize the revenue stream and maximize profits without cannibalizing the existing annuity base"Obviously at this point CBS is acting as a content provider, and not the service which delivers the product. Understanding what CBS and Verizon are doing will better enable those following Sirius and XM to understand the costs of getting content. XM already has a relationship with CBS with the recent announcement of the syndication of the Opie and Anthony show. Sirius also has a relationship with CBS, but that one is currently in the court system of New York and centers around ex CBS employee Howard Stern. The Kalla piece also talks about ABC and their recent agreements made with the guilds regarding this portable video concept often tagged as mobisodes. Video For Satellite Radio
April 25, 2006 Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio have both been pursuing the idea of offering video over their respective services. The concept might be well received by consumers, and some are already experiencing video clips over their cell phones such as V Cast from Verizon. Having cell phone companies in the video mix has to impact the business models revolving around implementing a live video service for both SDARS providers. One way that may be helpful is to generate two revenue streams from the video concept. The first revenue stream being the subscriber, and the second being advertisements. The question is what is the proper mix of ads that can be aired without aggravating your subscriber. Satellite Standard Group (SSG) came across an article that relates to the development of 5 second ads. While the article does not reference satellite radio, you can easily see how something such as the 5 second ad can become a part of a video service offered by Sirius or XM. Metacafe offers video content over the web, and currently sells 5 second ad slots to companies such as H & R Block. Meatcafe CEO Arik Czerniak stated, "Why not five-second video ads?" he said. "I would gladly put those in front of videos. But I will never put 30-second ads in front of videos. It's too much. It ruins the experience for viewers." The 5 second ad concept seems simple enough and non-intrusive enough that it may well be a concept that will garner consideration from Sirius and XM as they delve into the video arena. What shape will the business model for the video portion of satellite radio take? Only time will tell. Readers can read the whole article here via AdAge. Readers can visit MetaCafe here. Seen On The Message Boards
April 24, 2006 Internet message boards can be a wonderful thing, but all to often, they are clogged with senseless posts that are designed to scare people away. The most popular method is what we will term the "Drive By" post. The "Drive By" post is a post with a bulleted point that while in and of itself may be factual, does not tell the whole story. The Satellite Radio equities are a common battleground for "drive by" posts. Sirius Satellite Radio and rival XM Satellite Radio have a very unique circumstance that most other companies do not have. They operate in a virtual duopoly, and have customers that are very passionate about one service or the other. Sirius and XM are like the Yankees and Red Sox, or the Packers and the Vikings. It seems difficult for people to be fans of both, and their support of the chosen SDARS company can be very loyal. What this means is a continuous banter on message boards between people that love SDARS, but are passionate about one company or the other. This article is not about the banter between those that are passionate about SDARS. This article is about a group of people that support neither company, but utilize the passions of the banter to do their work. Today, we picked a post from the Sirius and XM Yahoo message boards to look at. This first post is from the Sirius Yahoo message board, and can be considered a typical "drive by" post. The post is #2455299 "SIRI is on track for BLOWOUT LOSSES....yep" The second post is from the XM Yahoo message board, and is another typical "drive by" post. The post #865200 "XM 2.4 BILLION IN DEBT & JUNK CREDIT...YEP CCC2 IS JUNK 1 STEP ABOVE BK" Both of these posts are "short and sweet". Both make a point. Neither offers anything beyond the point they make. Investors need to understand that many issues that are brought up in these "drive by" posts are designed to paint a very negative broad brushed stroke at the company for an issue that is very specific. Investors need to understand a broad brushed range of issues that are made up of MANY specific components. Those that think a little deeper will look at the loss for Sirius in Q1, and try to understand what it is that makes up the loss. How the current quarter impacts future quarters, and how the company is performing. Those that look at XM's debt and bond status need to understand what the debt is, how it enables the company to function, how it impacts cash flow, and further need to understand how the bonds market works, and how ratings are determined. The next time you see a "drive by" post, stop, look at it, take a few more steps than the poster did, and know that you will be better off in your investment decision (no matter what that decision is) because you took the time to do a bit more research than some "drive by" poster on the message boards. Sirius Family Plan
April 24, 2006 The quick eyes over at Sirius Backstage noticed that Sirius is stepping up their Family Plan to a certain extent. You can look at the Sirius Backstage piece here. Satellite Standard Group (SSG) had noted in an earlier article that the Family plan sector was an area that Sirius could well chase if they so desired. With Sirius' Family plan making up about 11% of the subscriber base, there is room for growth in this channel. By contrast, XM currently has about 20% of their subscriber base in the Family Plan. While the family plan subscribers do pay a lower monthly fee ($6.99), they do tend to be less expensive to gather up, and less likely to churn out. In the past, XM has indicated that the "sweetspot" for the Family plan is somewhere between 25% and 30% of the base. If this is true, then Sirius has plenty of room to grow this segment. This first push into this area will be short lived (it ends May1, 2006), and is likely a test run to see how well the promotion is accepted. WANT TO WIN A FREE STARMATE REPLAY? With the Sirius S50, you can do it quickly and easily without hours in front of the computer, or those downloading fees that you get with other services. Below is my recipe for great listening. Readers can come up withy their own ingredients to satisfy their own tastes. Here is what you need: - A Sirius S50 with a Home Dock or Executive Docking System (You can get the S50 Executive System here.)
- Equal Parts Classic Rewind, The Pulse, and the Big 80’s
- A sprig of 60’s vibrations
- A pinch of Totally 70’s
- A dash of Sirius Hits 1 and BBC Radio 1
- A One hour commute, jog, train ride, etc.
- The “Love Button” on the S50.
Here is what I do:
Each night, I dock the S50 in my home dock and tune it to a station that I enjoy. The S50 automatically records the content from that stream, and by morning I have several hours of songs to sort through. I take my S50, dock it in the car, and begin my morning commute (all important coffee at the ready). I select play lists, and play the songs from the channel recorded during the night. If I hear a song that I want to save I hit the love button. The song is saved within 30 seconds, and I fast forward to the next tune, and repeat the process throughout the commute. By the end of the commute I can easily have “loved” (saved) 30 or 40 songs. The next night I do the same thing with a new channel, and repeat the process on my commute. After 3 days or so I have created a play list that has a wide variety of songs, and have not spent hours in front of the computer. Should I desire, I can edit the play lists or modify them at any time by using My Sirius Studio software. Because there are no “download fees”, I find myself not getting hung up on which songs I save. I simply “love” the songs I enjoy at that given time. I can always delete them if I grow tired of them. The beauty of a device such as the S50 is that you have the ability to “love button” a song whenever you want, and don’t have to sit and think about the songs you would like in your play list. Even while listening to live satellite radio, I often find myself hitting the love button. To me the “LOVE BUTTON” represents instant audio satisfaction, and the S50 makes building the perfect play list very easy. WANT TO WIN A STARMATE REPLAY? CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT MORE.

Opie and Anthony Return to Terrestrial Radio
April 24, 2006 9:05AM EST This morning on my commute I tuned in terrestrial radio for the first time in a long time. I tuned in to WBCN 104.1 in Boston to see how the new Opie and Anthony Show was coming along in their return to terrestrial airwaves. I heard a bit of Green Day, and then and announcement to tune in at 9:00AM for a special announcement. It seems that O & A are not on quite there yet, but an announcement would be forthcoming. At 9:00AM it was announced that the shock jock duo will one again hit Boston airwaves, and the airwaves of 6 other markets beginning April 26, 2006. Will the return be a success? Only time and ratings books will tell. WANT TO WIN A STARMATE REPLAY? CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS.The link to this write up is http://tinyurl.com/f7b894/24/2006 09:25:00 AM

XM and CBS
April 22, 2006 1:03PM EST File this piece under Speculation. Satellite Standard Group (SSG) as well as others have seen and heard speculation about XM working with CBS. This week news broke that XM shock jocks Opie and Anthony would become available on terrestrial radio in seven markets. They will be replacing David Lee Roth. Is this the end of the CBS and XM relationship, or merely the beginning? XM has indicated that they could very well be seeking a partner for their WCS spectrum (should it be approved) which services 15 markets. The WCS deal upon approval will cost XM 5,500,000 shares of stock. At the time the deal was announced, the stock was at $36.00. Approval of the deal in the current stock price range would certainly help keep the share expense down for XM (the deal is still 5,500,000 shares). There is a lot of speculation about the WCS spectrum, and what type of services or content XM intends to deliver with it. At a minimum, if they want current subscribers to be able to use the service, upgrades would be in order. SSG has no information that the XM and CBS relationship is anything more than the Opie and Anthony deal, but given the recent pronouncements about bringing in a partner, it may well be something that is being considered. Perhaps adding to the speculation may be the recent refinancing package that XM did. This refinancing removed some very steep fixed payment obligations, and will do very well for the balance sheet.....something a potential partner may be more comfortable with. As stated earlier, this is simply speculation. The link to this write up is http://tinyurl.com/z3bao4/22/2006 01:00:00 PM

XM Refinances Debt
April 21, 2006 8:50PM EST Today after the market closed XM satellite radio filed paperwork with the SEC relating to debt refinancing. Satellite Standard Group (SSG) takes a look at the refinancing deal and breaks it down. In simple terms, XM took on $800,000,000 worth of new debt and retired $447,000,000 of existing debt. The net on the transaction was the addition of about $353,000,000 on new debt. The deals finance $600,000,000 at a fixed rat of 9.75%. The remaining $200,000,000 is at a floating interest rate starting out at 9.6%. Interest expenses on the new debt should total about $78,000,000 per year (using 9.7% as a rate). Previously the old debt had payments of about $52,000,000 per year. The interest payments by XM have effectively gone up by $26,000,000 a year. Of that $353,000,000 of new debt XM used $240,000,000 to prepay General Motors for fixed payment obligations that would have been due in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Previously those fixed payments would have totaled $320,000,000 and had no interest tied to them. So while the $240,000,000 is less than the $320,000,000 the prepayment money has been borrowed. If we assume a rate of 9.7% for the borrowed money, XM will pay $186,000,000 in interest over the 8 year period that the financing is in place. This brings the total GM obligation to $240,000,000 + $186,000,000= $426,000,000 instead of $320,000,000. This prepayment to GM takes a short term burden of substantial payments off of XM's shoulders, and allows them to spread that cost over 8 years, rather than the coming 3 years. In effect, it will improve the cash flow for XM in 2007, 2008, and 2009 substantially. The balance sheet for 2006 will not look as nice, but going forward it can give XM some leverege. Under the previous deal, the payments to GM would have been made from cash. They are now financed. It would appear that this deal with GM included the fixed obligation payments only. It seems that XM will still have to pay GM subsidies, as well as a revenue share. Also as part of the financing, XM picked up a $250,000,000 revolving credit facility. This is likely at a cost of 50 basis points, and thus would have a cost of about $1,000,000 per year. In the short term, there may be some confusion relating to the deal, and how various costs will be accounted for. You can be sure that XM will field some questions relating to this at the quarterly Conference Call. On a long term basis, this refinancing will help XM with cash flow, and will make financial statements look much more healthy despite the added debt. The wild card here remains the WCS spectrum, what XM has planned for it, and what kind of costs will be needed to roll out the use of it. If XM can utilize the spectrum without big costs, the street should be very receptive. If the costs are high, it will be a much harder sell with the street. This piece was done using rounded numbers for simplicity. SSG is not a financial advisor. Martha Stewart Promotes Sirius
April 21, 2006 - 2:30PM EST The quick eyes over at Sirius Back Stage found an interesting Martha Stewart promotion involving Mothers Day. Looks like the Martha brand is "cross promoting" by taking one aspect of her brand and combining it with another. SSG Exclusive Interview With Manson Of The Bubba The Love Sponge Show
April 21, 2006 - 1:45PM EST Satellite Standard Group (SSG) is not only about news, investments and hardware. We also like to bring you other content that you may find interesting. This Week SSG interviewed Mason from the Bubba The Love Sponge Show. Manson is a staple on the show, and is the man behind many of the parodies and bits that listeners hear and enjoy so much. SSG - Manson, you are well known for your creation of bits and song parodies. What is it that inspires your work? Manson - My faith in Jesus Christ. He died on the cross so I could do funny shit bits on the radio. Or if I have writers block, I pray to Satan, and smoke dope.SSG - The Bubba The Love Sponge Show is a hit on Sirius Satellite Radio. Satellite radio gives you much more latitude and freedom in your work. Can you picture yourself back on terrestrial radio? Manson - Absolutely not. Unless I get fired and had no where else to go.SSG - How do you define McGuilicutty?Manson - It's everything, or nothing. Whatever you want it to be. Bush should start using it. SSG - You are also well known for your voice impersonations. What are some of your favorite voices to do? Manson - Clinton and Tyson were always my favorites. They don't make celebs like that anymore. SSG - Where do you practice these impersonations?Manson - If I'm doing a bit that involves an impersonation, I will get a tape of the subject and do the lines over and over until I get it right.SSG - What do you think of Laskers new Nike's?Manson - They are awesome!(If you're a 12 year old boy.)SSG - Which Sirius receiver do you have, and if you were to turn it on right now what station would it be on? Manson - I have an S50 and it is tuned to Howard 101SSG - What channels are your favorites on Sirius?Manson - 100, 101, all polka and clogging channels.SSG - How do you keep up with current events?Manson - I watch Fox news incessantly. It's infuriating in it's right wing bias, but hey it's a much better presentation than CNN. Plus No one can tell me I'm influenced by the Left wing media. Sirius Conference Call Outlook
April 20, 2006 8:50PM EST Sirius Satellite Radio has announced the date and time of their First Quarter Conference Call. You can read about that here. Satellite Standard Group (SSG) would like to point out what the expectations are, and what investors may want to watch for. What The Street Is ExpectingThe street is looking for a loss of 35 cents per share with revenue of $122,870,000.What To Watch For1. Watch for the reaction by the street to the size of the loss. Sirius announced that they were taking the full cost of the Howard Stern shares issued in January of this year in Q1. The value (cost) of those shares is about $220,000,000. The impact on the loss for one quarter is very big, and there may be some out there who are not expecting it despite the fact that this event is well known.2. Watch for a lower Subscriber Acquisition Cost. One of the benefits of a big spill-over of subscribers fro Q4 into Q1 is that those subscribers SAC costs were already absorbed in Q4. This should help bring down the SAC number. However, you should also be aware that there were inventory crunches, and Sirius apparently did go "back to manufacture". This type of activity has costs associated with it. There were also rumors during the quarter that Sirius was flying over product to meet demand. While that did get product to stores more quickly, it is also a more expensive method of getting hardware stateside. 3. Watch for ramped up OEM's. This channel of Sirius' subscribers has seen substantial growth, and will continue to see growth. Sirius is anticipating about 826,000 NET OEM subscribers this year, so one might imagine that on average we should see a bit over 200,000 in each quarter. 4. Watch for improved advertising revenue. Mel Karmazin has stated that advertising revenue has been doing very well, but has not yet raised guidance from ad revenue being 10% of 2006 revenue. This call will offer the first taste of how well the ad revenue is doing. Investors should run a quick check on the numbers to see if Q1 ad revenue is better than 10% of overall revenue. In our opinion, if ad revenue is anything over 12.5% we may see Mel increase guidance in this area. 5. Watch For Strong Discussion about CFBE. Sirius has stated that they anticipate that they can be CFBE in Q4. Look for Mel to hone in on the metrics that illustrate this. 6. Watch for Discussion about the retail channel. Sirius captured 59% NPD share in Q1. Look for Mel to talk about this, and look for him to give the number with the inclusion of Wal Mart, Sams, and Costco. Look for Mel to speak about what consumers are doing when they have a choice. 7. Subscribers. Sirius has not yet announced the subscriber total for the 1st quarter. They will surely announce it in the call, and will show that they are well on their way to reaching their stated guidance of 6,000,000 subscribers by the end of the year. At this points most analysts feel that Sirius can indeed obtain that goal. Sirius does in fact have a distinct sector where they can grow even further. The Friends and family section of the Sirius subscriber base makes up about 11%. Rival XM is at about 20%, and has aggressively marketed to this section of the market. If Sirius were to decide to be aggressive in this sector, they could garner a good number of subscribers on top of what they are already projecting. 8. Hardware. Watch for Sirius to finally offer some more flavor on the new hardware. People know it's coming, but are in hopes that it comes in time for the Fathers Day sales push. UPDATE: An SSG staffer noted that there is another item that investors should be aware of:9. Sirius stated in the 4th Quarter that they had about $100 million in deferred payments for hardware that normally would have been paid in the 4th Quarter, but due to a slight shift in their production was not due until the 1st Quarter. Thus cash usage in the 1st Q should be about $100 million higher than it would have been without the shift. CLARIFICATION - SSG would like to thank a readr for a question they had that led to this clarification. The shift of hardware costs from Q4 to Q1 is figured into the analyst average expectations NOT in addition to it. Basically investors will see the hardware subsidy costs run at a higher figure that normally would be the case. Thank you SSG readers for your questions and comments. Basically, Sirius should have a whole list of good things to announce in the call. The biggest question is whether all of that is enough to offset the large number that will be in the loss column. Mel Karmazin needs to be crystal clear in the guidance, and explain the Q1 loss in simple terms that will not get bogged down in confusion. If Mel can do this, there could be some positive reaction from the street. Satellite Standard group is not a Financial Advisor. Apple Snubs Portal Player
April 20, 2006 8:35PM EST Satellite Standard Group (SSG) has picked up on this little change that appears to be in the works from the folks at Apple. It seems that Apple has chosen not to use Portal Player in some of their upcoming products. Apple has enjoyed a distinct advantage in the recorded content world for quite some time. Sirius Satellite Radio and rival XM Satellite Radio are hoping to chip away into that market by marketing devices such as the S50 from Sirius. Both Sirius and XM have new devices hitting shelves this year that will challenge that position further. Sirius' S50 was the first satellite radio receiver capable of capturing individual songs, and allowing MP3 type formats to be stored on the device. The S50 however is not a "live wearable" device. Sirius plans to release a "live wearable" device this summer. XM has a few devices that should be hitting shelves soon. The Pioneer Inno and the Samsung Helix are "live wearable" devices capable of capturing individual songs. XM will also have a non-live unit called the Nexus hitting store shelves as well. These new devices from Sirius and XM are capable of something I-Pods and traditional MP3 players can't really do. Capture content while you are listening to it. Sirius and XM may well have a hit on their hands with these types of devices, but don't look for Apple to bow down gracefully. You can read about the Apple/Portal Player news here viaEngadget. Interesting Howard Stern Promotion
April 20, 2006 1:15PM EST File this one under "Interesting Promotions" Howard Stern has been widely known for his particular brand of humor and programming. XM Q1 Conference Call Outlook
April 20, 2006 – 10:29AM EST XM Satellite Radio has announced their 1st Quarter Conference Call date and time. The call will take place on April 27, 2006, and you can read more about that via a previous SSG article here. This piece outlines Street expectations as well as some opinions by SSG. Street ExpectationsOn average it appears as though the street is expecting XM to announce a loss of 53 cents per share on revenue of about $201,500,000. What To Watch For1. After missing the numbers in the fourth quarter, XM commented that they are committed to bringing spending into line. It is important that XM show progress here by coming in near expectations. 2. Subscriber Acquisition Costs (SAC). XM’s SAC went up substantially in the fourth quarter, and played a major role in them missing targets. XM needs to demonstrate that they have the SAC under control. The street is looking for signs that they can be confident in, and a good SAC could go a long way in quelling concerns about costs. 3. WCS Spectrum. XM has made a deal to acquire the WCS spectrum of bandwidth. The bandwidth serves several major markets, but the issue is still before the FCC. The street has been speculating as to what the bandwidth will be used for, but also seems to have questions about the expenses involved in being able to deploy the use of this spectrum. Watch to see if XM offers any “color” on the WCS subject. 4. Subscribers. The Q1 subscriber tall of about 568,000 subscribers has already been announced. Some analysts have already lowered their end of year guidance on subscribers for XM and are at this point calling for XM to miss the 9,000,000 year end subscribers that XM has stated previously. Many analysts cite that XM needs a very good performance from the OEM channel to hit the goals. Watch for XM to address the subscriber guidance and to likely reiterate that they will get to 9,000,000. 5. Cash Flow Break Even (CFBE). XM has stated that they anticipate reaching CFBE in Q4 (not including capital expenditures). Like with the subscriber guidance, there are analysts who do not feel XM will hit this target. IMO if XM feels they can hit it, they need to make a strong statement about the subject, and offer a path by which they will get there. 6. Refinancing. XM recently announced a refinancing plan that they anticipated to be complete on May 1. This means that the transaction may not be complete in time for the call. Questions are surely going to be asked however, and XM should be very clear in their answers. Aspects of this refinancing could well impact the CFBE subject, and may help XM achieve their stated goal. 7. OEM channel ramp up. Watch for XM to discuss in greater detail the level of OEM participation in 2006. This segment of subscribers is important to XM reaching their end of year targets. 8. Hardware. XM will likely dedicate a small portion of the call to their new hardware. The hardware is in the process of launching, and XM will likely offer some “color” on the subject. The bottom line is that XM needs to have a convincing call and illustrate that they have corrected spending issues. They also need to offer solid guidance that the street can embrace. SSG suggests that anyone invested into either SDARS equity listen to the call. A lot of good information comes out of these calls. Satellite Standard group is not a financial advisor. SSG strongly encourages that investors do their own research and seek the advice of a Certified Financial Planner prior to making any investment decisions.

Opie and Anthony and XM and CBS?
April 20, 2006 - 9:41 AM EST In a story that has garnered coverage from Orbitcast, it would appear that XM Satellite Radio Shock Jock's Opie and Anthony will have their show syndicated onto the stations where Davi Lee Roth is currently broadcasting. Speculation is that Roth will be removed from the airwaves, and that a version of the Opie and Anthony show will be the replacement. The move has sparked some interesting debate on the message boards. There are people who applaud the move, and people who look at it as a sell out. A major concern among fans seems to center on whether or not the show will be diluted so as to give enough material that can pass FCC muster on terrestrial airwaves. Only time will tell if this mix of satellite and terrestrial radio will work for the shock jock format. NPD - And Wal Mart
April 19, 2006 - 9:05PM EST I have had some inquiries about Wal Mart and how this may affect the NPD Data. Sirius covered the subject in both the third quarter conference call and the fourth quarter conference call. In the third quarter call Sirius stated that if you consider Wal Mart, Sams Club, and Costco in conjunction with the NPD data that you would have to subtract 2 percentage points from the Sirius total and add them to the XM total In the fourth quarter call, that same consideration was between 1.5 points and 2 points, again, subtracting from Sirius and adding to XM. Sirius may well address the Wal Mart, Sams Club and Costco adjustments again in the first quarter call. Additionally, looking back on last year, the difference between the NPD percentages and the retail results on a NET basis as reported by XM and Sirius was 2 points, not the 6 to 8 points that some people often seem to quote. This is not to say that NPD correlates directly with the "as reported" retail numbers. They are measuring different items. NPD is a good indicator of consumer sentiment. 4/19/2006 09:08:00 PM

The Stern Effect Squared
April 19, 2006 THE CONTEST IS HERE - READ BELOWSatellite Standard Group (SSG) recently published an article about “The Stern Effect.” You can read the article here. “The Stern Effect” article was then posted on the front page of howardstern.com with a link to Satellite standard Group. Here is what happened…… SSG got to see “The Stern Effect” first hand!!!!! Web site traffic of unique visitors to satellitestandard.com increased dramatically over the course of only a few hours as fans seeking information from howardstern.com read the story. Basically we now have the “Stern Effect” of the article titled “The Stern Effect”, or as one reader called it, “The Stern Effect Squared.” SSG told our story to the folks at The Sirius Store (TSS), and they thought it was great. TSS agreed to sponsor a contest regarding this story, and has agreed to give the winner of the contest a FREE STARMATE REPLAY. Here’s how it works: 1. SSG wants readers to submit their guesses as to the increase in unique traffic from our previous high traffic day as compared to the day howardstern.com posted the link on their page. A Deeper Look AT The NPD Data
April 19. 2006 The Chart above represents the sales split on the NPD data for all of 2005 as well as the first quarter in 2006. You can click on the chart to enlarge it. What you can see here is a virtual reversal from the first quarter 2005 to the first quarter 2006 in the favor of Sirius Satellite Radio. Sirius Satellite Radio has led XM Satellite Radio in the last seven consecutive months, and 8 out of the last 10 months. Some have attributed this to the Howard Stern Effect, and certainly that would appear to have had an impact. What is clear from this data is that Sirius Satellite Radio is performing very well at the retail channel, and it would appear that the brand recognition of Sirius remains to be strong. Some people are looking for a point at which "The Stern Effect" wanes and normalizes, but there seems to be debate about what the normalized market share will be. In the opinion of SSG, the satellite radio companies should settle down at about parity in terms of NPD share, unless there is a substantial move made on the part of one of the companies. The time frame at which this settling down happens is still up in the air. Something as simple as Howard Sterns programming being available via on-line listening could very well stoke the fires of "The Stern Effect" yet again. March NPD Is Out
April 19, 2006 The NPD Data is out, and once again, it stirs controversy on the message boards. It seems that there are many people who do not understand what NPD is, and more specifically what NPD tracks. First let us get the March market split out of the way. For March 2006 the NPD market share was as follows: Sirius – 56% XM – 44% For the entire first quarter the NPD share split was as follows: Sirius - 59% XM - 41% Now to address what NPD is and what it tracks. From the NPD Website "NPD point of sale (POS) information is collected from approximately 600 retail partners that provide store movement information. NPD partners represent more than 120,000 doors worldwide. Additionally NPD works with distributors in targeted industries to provide comprehensive views of the market. Their network spans key retail distribution channels such as department stores, national chains, specialty stores, mass and more.
Equipped with NPD information, retailers and the manufacturers that supply products to them can better understand how their performance compares to what is happening in the rest of the market. This enables them to identify new opportunities and areas of potential vulnerability so they can be proactive in taking appropriate actions.
The POS information provided to NPD from retailers’ cash registers provides participating retailers with product sales and pricing detail for both themselves and the remaining channel or market. This level of detail helps companies assess which products are selling, which are not, at what price points, and in which channels. It also makes it possible for retailers to evaluate their company’s performance in key merchandise categories relative to the aggregate competition. NPD also aggregates its data for certain merchandise categories/classes of trade, providing an even more comprehensive view of changes occurring in the retail marketplace." What Many People Misunderstand About NPD
On the message boards people often state that the NPD data is not accurate because the percentages do not match up with what Sirius and XM report at the end of the quarter. There is a reason for this and it is as follows: 1. NPD tracks retail sales on a GROSS basis. Retail subscribers reported by Sirius and XM are on a NET basis. Further, there can sometimes be a gap between when a unit is purchased (and thus recorded by NPD), and when the purchaser activates their subscription with either Sirius or XM. 2. The NPD data is indeed accurate. It is based on actual sales of units. Those who call it inaccurate simply are likely misinformed about what NPD is and what it tracks. 3. NPD does not track Wal Mart. It also does not track small independent retailers, nor the sales from Sirius Direct or XM Direct. This is a factor that can skew the percentages that NPD captures vs. the overall percentage comparisons. 4. NPD does capture the sales from the stores that are most responsible for overall sales of satellite radio. 5. NPD does not capture any “give-away” units such as XM’s baseball promotion. The value in the NPD numbers is in comparing how each company is performing at retail stores and chains where most SDARS units are sold. NPD is very good at showing a trend, and very good at illustrating consumer sentiment with regards to which service is more popular. SSG recommends that before you discount any data that you first comprehend it. Those that choose to ignore the data are not really doing themselves any favors. It is always good to learn and know as much as you can. The link to this write up is http://tinyurl.com/m24zk4/19/2006 11:02:00 AM

XM Moving Averages
April 19, 2006 Last week Satellite Standard Group (SSG) did a piece relating to the 20 day Moving Average (MA) and the 50 day Moving Average (MA). You can read that piece by clicking here. The context of the article was about how bullish Sirius has been when the 20 day MA passes the 50 day MA to the upside. Well, for Sirius that still has not quite happened . As of this writing the 20 day MA is still 3 cents below the 50 day MA. It is getting close, but simply has not happened as yet. The news, however, could be bright. XM Satellite Radio has now done precisely what the piece was about. The 20 day MA for XM has now crossed the 50 day MA. Is this bullish signal for XM. We certainly hope so. These equities have had a tendency to trade in very similar patterns. From a technical standpoint, what has been good for one has been good for the other. As a SDARS investor, it is good to see XM cross that point, and Sirius approaching it. Satellite Standard Group is not a financial advisor. RIAA Strongarm Tactics
April 18, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) has been keeping our eyes out for anything involving the Recording Industry Association of America, better known as the RIAA. The reason is simple. The current deal between the RIAA and satellite radio providers Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio expires quite soon. At this point there is not much known about where talks between the involved parties. Should an agreement fail to be reached, the issue will go to arbitration, where the rates will be set. Mel Karmazin, CEO of Sirius Satellite Radio spoke out regarding the issue at the Global Automotive Conferece last week. He remarked, "...I told them that if they really would like to get a big increase in what they’re currently getting, what they should do for us is they ought to take music off every place else in radio. So if, in fact, they were to take music off of terrestrial radio and the only way you’d be able to hear music would be by listening to satellite radio, then I think we could pay them a significant increase over what they’re making, what they’re currently getting." Today, AdAge wrote a piece regarding how the RIAA has strongarmed college students with lawsuits regarding music downloading practices. The piece tells the story of one M.I.T. student, Cassi Hunt, who has decided to strike back. What will happen with the satellite radio negotiations with the RIAA? That is unknown, but we do have confidence in Mel Karmazin to strike the best possible deal. You can read the whole AdAge article here. Maxim Gets Even More Digital
April 18, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) likes to keep you up to speed with the happenings that have an effect on the satellite radio world. We recently saw an article that relates to Sirius Satellite Radio’s content partner Maxim. Maxim has embraced the digital age. They already have a channel on Sirius that carries original and compelling content. You can learn more about Maxim's Sirius Channel by clicking here. Maxim, according to an a AdAge article by Nat Ives, seems to have taken the next step by making their magazine available on cell phones. This is an excerpt from the piece: “…For Maxim, which already operates a sprawling digital platform, multiplying print's force meant making its May issue the inaugural "Maxim Mobile" edition. An editor's letter in the issue, which goes on sale April 25, urges readers to consume the issue with cell phones in hand and to enter contests and submit content whenever they see a "Maxim Mobile" icon.” With the digital platform rapidly changing, it is only a matter of time before satellite radio begins to cash in on such initiatives, and is perhaps the biggest reason why satellite radio is pursuing content deals such as Maxim and Cosmo, as well as deals with cell phone carries such as Sprint. April 18, 2006 File this one under “Needs Attention.” It would appear that Sirius Satellite Radio message boards are a place to go if you are seeking attention. S50 Executive System Has Arrived
April 17, 2006 Well, the Sirius S50 Executive System is now available, and it is a hot item. Satellite Standard Group (SSG) has spoken to one on line retailer who has a healthy supply of the highly sought after product. The Sirius Store has plenty in stock, and is ready to accept orders for the unit. You can contact them via this link. SSG has found TSS to be very knowledgeable and helpful regarding THE Sirius product line. SSG spoke to the folks at The Sirius Store (TSS), and they are excited about the new product. They did state that they have several back orders for the S50 Home kits, which seem to have a very limited supply. They want those customers to know that they are still in the system, but as yet a delivery date from the distributor has not been determined. Customers awaiting the S50 Home Kit will receive an e-mail as soon as those kits arrive. TSS has changed their pre-order policy based on what happened with the S50 as well as the S50 Home Kit. TSS was not alone in back-orders on these popular units. Many retailers experienced heavy demand for the products, and the supply line simply could not keep up. TSS stressed to me that they wanted to their customers to know that they understand the frustration surrounding the delivery of S50 products, and that they will work with their customers to remedy the situation. Now, about the S50 Executive System: 1. The S50 Executive System can be described as a cross between a boom box and a shelf stereo system. In other words, it is not the type of system that you take to the beach. The system does not offer battery power. It is more along the lines of a table-top radio. 2. The S50 Executive System serves as a perfect unit for use at the office, or with your home stereo. It is self contained in the sense that it has its own speakers. 3. The sound quality is quite nice. The unit does not have a sub-woofer, but does have bass enhancement technology for those that like a deeper sound. 4. The system has 10 watts x 2 channels, and features all of the controls that the car kit and home kit offer, including the popular love button. 5. The S50 Executive System is self contained. No need to run it through an existing system. 6. The unit sports a headphone jack and auxiliary input (i-pods etc. can be run through the unit), and comes with a desktop stand as well as a wall mounting bracket. 7. The SIRIUS S50 Executive System is portable enough (16” wide x 7” tall x 2.5” deep) to move from place to place with ease, letting people bring Sirius into any room. The units sleek design form factor makes it a natural in any home stereo environment. Those interested in the unit can contact retailers such as TSS. Form 4's Filed By Sirius
April 17, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) has decided to do a write up on this subject because it is something that is often used on message boards, and is often done in error. Yes, there were insider sales by Sirius executives today. That statement in and of itself is true.....but there is more to the story. You see, these sales really had nothing to do with how these executives feel about Sirius or Sirius' stock. The sales were made to pay Uncle Sam. Today Mr. Greenstein and Mr. Meyer sold shares of Sirius Satellite Radio. This kind of information will undoubtedly appear on the message boards with a negative connotation attached to the message. SSG encourages you to look deeper. If you look at the filings you will see something that investors should be aware of: "Shares of common stock sold are equal to federal and state taxes due on April 15, 2006 as the result of the vesting of restricted stock units and the related brokerage commission on the sale."
You can view these filings yourself by visiting the Investor Relations section of the Sirius website here.

Want A Better OEM Take Rate?
April 16, 2006 This is a Satellite Standard Group (SSG) Opinion piece relating to the “Take Rate” (the number of people who keep satellite radio after the promotional period ends) of satellite radio in cars. The factory installed satellite radio is getting more and more penetration into vehicle lines with each passing quarter. This seems great at first blush, but when you look a little deeper, you will find that the factory installed subscriptions simply are not as “sticky” as those subscribers that buy at retail. The question is why?: The Radios Are Not As Capable As The Plug and Play Version.Factory installed radios typically are not as capable and lack the features that their retail cousins the 'plug and play' lines have. The OEM displays do not give the information in an easy to read format and the radios do not have the memory features that many of the plug and play radios do. With a plug and play you tell the radio your favorite songs and artists, and the radio will let you know when they are playing. With Plug and Play units, you can get data that scrolls the screen. Want sports scores or stock quotes? It is there on a plug and play, but you wont find it on OEM units. Simply stated, the OEM radios still seem to be designed to cater to AM radio, FM radio, and CD’s. The manufacturers to date have not taken advantage of making OEM radios that accentuate the many facets of what satellite radio can deliver. The Subscription Is Tied To The CarConsumers who are paying for something typically want to have the ability to take it with them. A factory installed unit at this point is tethered to your vehicle. A potential solution would be to make an in dash docking unit similar to a plug and play that the consumer can remove and take with them. Another potential solution would be in a device similar to the Passport offered by XM Satellite Radio. The Passport is a chip embedded into a case that is about the size of a book of matches. A simple solution would be to simply have a slot in a factory receiver and allow the consumer to plug their “matchbook” into that slot. Other hand-held devices and home receivers could also have slots, thus allowing the consumer to take their satellite radio with them. In our opinion, the next solution is a slot that will accept a “chip” from either service. Hopefully Sirius and XM are working towards improving the OEM experience. For many consumers, a factory installed satellite radio tied to a promotional subscription is their first experience with satellite radio. In our opinion, this is the chance for satellite radio to make a lasting first impression that can keep the consumer wanting more. Sirius and XM should make the most of this by getting hardware installed that sells the service better than the current offerings. Satellite radio is all about content offerings, but the user interface also makes a lasting impression. A better OEM radio will translate directly into a better OEM Take Rate. Sirenza Microdevices Profile
April 14, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) does a profile on companies that have relationships to satellite radio. Last week we profiled RF Monolithics in this piece on April 7th. This week we are taking a look at Sirenza Microdevices (symbol SMDI). We profile these companies because they may present investment opportunities, or simply informative information, that people invested into satellite radio may want to consider. Sirenza Microdevices got its start in 1985 as Matrix Microassembly Corporation and was based in Santa Clara California. In 1992, they began doing business as Stanford Microdevices, Inc., and moved their operations to Sunnyvale California. In May of 2000, the company became publicly traded on NASDAQ, and in October of 2001, the company name became what it is today….Sirenza Microdevices. Shortly thereafter Sirenza made several acquisitions, and has now grown the company to what it is today. Sirenza is now headquartered in Broomfield Colorado and now, through the acquisition of Premier Devices, Inc. on April 4, 2006, has operations in China and Germany. The CEO is Robert Van Buskirk. Now that you know who Sirenza is, it is only fitting to discuss what it is they do, and how they tie in with satellite radio. Sirenza is a supplier of RF components. The company designs and develops RF components for commercial communications, consumer, and aerospace/defense equipment markets. Sireza has product lines that include integrated circuit (IC), multi-chip modules (MCC), as well as passive product lines. Sireza’s products can be found in amplifiers, power amplifiers, cable TV amplifiers, circulators, isolators, mixers, splitters, transformers, couplers, modulators, demodulators, transceivers, tuners, discrete devices, signal source components, government and military specified components, and antennae and receivers for satellite radio. Sirenza’s certifications include ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System and ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System (registered by QMI). Sirenza has a relationship with Sirius Satellite Radio. The make the ultra low profile antennas that come with the popular S50 and Sportster Replay receivers. You can read about the relationship in the July 14, 2005 press release here. The Sirenza deal with Sirius Satellite Radio is only a small part of Sirenza’s business. Sirenza has many other sectors of operation, and operates in a global environment. This is what makes Sirenza an interesting consideration for those that follow the satellite radio equities. Investing into a company such as this allows you to participate in the growth of satellite radio while also letting you diversify into a company that has other clients beyond Sirius. Sirenza will be announcing their first quarter operating results on May 3rd, 2006 at 4:45 PM EST. A webcast will be available at sirenza.com. Those that follow Sirius may want to listen in to the Sireza call. A lot of low profile antennas were sold in the first quarter…..perhaps Sirenza will be mentioning that in their call. Bullish Signal For Sirius?
April 14, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) likes to look at various aspects ofinvesting, including technical analysis. Chart watchers have various strategies that they look to for direction, and even trade equities by. Today we took a look at the chart of Sirius Satellite Radio (symbolSIRI) and noticed that Sirius may be on the cusp of something that has been a bullish signal in the past. This piece looks into the 20 dayMoving Average (MA) in relationship to the 50 day Moving Average. Currently the 20 day MA is at $5.11 and the 50 day MA is at $5.17. In the past, whenever the 20 day MA crosses above the 50 day MA, Sirius has always responded with a nice run up in price per share. The 20 day MA has been below the 50 day MA since January, and the stock had been performing bearishly. Beginning in April the 20 day MA has been moving closer to the 50 day MA, and it now appears that a crossover could happen in the next several days. Looking back over the last couple of years, here were the last occurrences of this technical signal: Mar 2004 - 20-day crossed the 50-day (moving up) at $2.95, within amonth Sirius peaked at over $4. Sept 2004 - 20-day crossed the 50-day (moving up) at $2.50, three months later the stock peaked over $9. May 2005 -- 20-day crossed 50-day at $5.30, with 2 months stock at $7.49 Sept 2005 -- 20-day crossed 50-day at $6.60, within a few days it was at $7.61. Nov 2005 -- 20-day crossed 50-day at $6.60, within a month it was at $7.98 Will the trend continue????? We will see quite soon. UPDATE: A reader submitted the following - In the continuing effort to provide insightful information please note the following additions to what was written earlier. If you look at the candle stick patterns on the weekly chart you can see that Sirius has a hammer formation which is typically the sign of a reversal pattern.
Sirius has had good follow though to the upside, with an increase involume. This occurred in the the week of March 13th.
The stock then went into a triangle pattern from which it broke out to the upside.
On the weekly chart we had a inside formation, relative to last week.( higher low and lower high ). Typically this is a continuation pattern. Going forward, in addition to what was posted earlier let's look at a fewmore indicators.
1. The MACD histogram is showing signs of going though the zero line on the charts.
2. The WM%R is currently at -60.0 this oscillate between -80 ( oversoldcondition) to -20 (overbought condition) once it has crossed over to the -79point it has risen into the over bought area. Typically in a steep line.
3. The RSI is currently at 42.3 doesnt get to oversold until 70 or better.
4. The STO (fast as well as the slow) are in their midrange. more upsideto go .
5. Lastly in addition to what was said earlier in regards to the movingaverages we have another event on the horizon and that is the golden cross (50 day MA crossing the 200 dayMA) technically that is a big one.
If you are looking for the charts refer to the stockcharts.com web site. The weekly chart is where all this info comes from. as all ways use your own DD and best judgement to make trading decision's. Cramer Lightning
April 14, 2006 Satellite Standard group (SSG) like to keep you up to speed with the happenings in satellite radio. Last evening on the “Lightning Round” segment of his Mad Money show on CNBC, Jim Cramer took a call about Sirius Satellite Radio (symbol SIRI). Cramers comments were, "Epoxyed to $5. I couldn't break it loose with a crowbar. Don'tBuy Don'tBuyt Don'tBuy." That opinion is all well and good for his Lightning Round, but what exactly does it mean? Like him or not, Jim Cramer has an opinion. He also has viewers, and that can impact an equity. So, Cramer is of the opinion that Sirius is “epoxyed to $5.” He has also stated “Do’t bet against Mel.”….referring to Sirius Satellite Radio CEO Mel Karmazin. Is Sirius epoxyed to $5? Perhaps…at least for the time being. You see, Sirius is a few weeks away from reporting their first quarter operating results. The street is highly anticipating these results, as well as the guidance that Karmazin will be offering. Everyone is waiting for a catalyst that will help Sirius, as well as rival XM move forward, and thus waiting to see some guidance from these companies. It is no secret that Sirius and XM are not yet profitable. These companies are both in the early stages of their growth. Great subscriber numbers and the announcements of content deals used to be events that acted as a catalyst, and to a smaller extent now, they still do. The new buzz phrase, however, for this industry is Cash Flow Break Even (CFBE), and at this point Sirius and XM sit in that “no-mans-land” between the old catalyst of subs and content deals and what will be the new catalyst CFBE. Cramer states that he couldn’t move Sirius with a crow bar. The reason is that Cramer does not posses the crow bar. That tool is in the hands of Sirius’ CEO Mel Karmazin, and we know that Cramer has previously stated, “Don’t bet against Mel.” Karmazin has stated and reiterated several times that Sirius is on the way to being CFBE in the fourth quarter of this year and throughout 2007. If Sirius shows clearly that they are on that path to CFBE, the catalyst (or crow bar) could come into play quickly. Should investors listen to what Cramer has to say? That is for each investor to consider for themselves. In our opinion investors should be aware of what he says, but should also take a deeper look into the equity and what is happening with it. There are more sources for your investment guidance than Jim Cramer and Mad Money. Does Cramer’s sentiment set a base for Sirius? Perhaps it helps firm up a base that many already felt was in place. Investors should ask themselves if they feel that the $5.00 range is a solid base for the company. If you feel that it is, and you feel that Mel Karmazin will deliver on bringing this company to CFBE, then you may want to consider a play in this equity. UPDATE: A reader has pointed out that Jim Cramer does sydicate his show on CBS Radio, and that there is a potential conflict due to the fact that CBS Radio has named Sirius in a law suit.Satellite Standard Group is not a Financial Advisor. Changing The Perception Of Radio
April 14, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) has been following satellite radio for quite some time. We have watched the medium grow from the times when the initial “gadget-heads” jumped on board through the current Howard Stern converts. The sector now boasts over 10,000,000 subscribers and is growing every day. For many who are not “in tune” with satellite radio, the concept of paying for radio may seem foreign. Those that have made the switch often state that they can’t live without it. In a recent speech at the Morgan Stanley Global Automotive Conference Mel Karmazin, CEO of Sirius Satellite Radio stated, “We have over 90% of our subscribers satisfied with the service and 86% who would recommend Sirius to a friend.” So why is there this disconnect with people who are not yet satellite radio subscribers? The answer most likely lies in what their perception of radio is. They likely live in a market with about a dozen FM radio station and perhaps a dozen AM stations. Of those 24 stations, maybe 4 or 5 appeal to them on some level, and while listening to those stations, they have to deal with and listen to large blocks of advertising. This is what these people perceive as radio, and this is why they would question the concept of paying for radio. They simply are conditioned by years of the status quo. Those that have made the switch typically love satellite radio, and here are some reasons why: Commercial Free Music. Both Sirius and XM offer a wide variety of commercial free music channels. This enables you to listen to your favorite music without having to spend 40% of your commute hearing ads for the latest hair growth product. Variety of Music. Sirius and XM offer a wide variety of music that will match your tastes….even from moment to moment. Are you in the mood for today’s hits? You have them. Want to hear some good 70’s tunes? You can have it at the press of a button. Want some good background music for the office? Just a button press away. Do you like rock, but want to hear that cross-over country hit? Once again, just press the button. Unparalleled Content. Sirius and XM also offer content that you simply don’t get anywhere else on radio. Are you watching CNBC in the morning as you get ready for work? Did you see a story that is due in the next segment, but need to head out the door? No problem at all….Sirius and XM have the feed on their services. Do you like Fox News or CNN? They have that as well. Do you want comedy, shock jocks, programming for women, programming for kids, programming for men, football, baseball, hockey, NBA, Nascar, soccer, horse racing, tennis, or golf? Satellite radio likely has you covered. The selection is immense. Unequaled Capability. Sirius and XM give you far more than just great content. You get to see the artist of the song. You get to see the name of the song. You can even see the year the song was released. You can have your hardware notify you when your favorite song or artist is being played on any channel, and get to that song at the press of a button. You can save songs, or entire shows. Some units let you pause and/or rewind a song. Are you listening to Jay Thomas, but need to order your coffee at Dunkin Donuts? Simply pause the show, order your large coffee, and then press play. You didn’t miss a thing. This feature is very helpful when the cell phone rings. In short, satellite radio is nothing like the radio you may be used to. It is a brand new medium that offers more than you could even think of, and you have access to all of it for what amounts to 43 cents per day. Both Sirius and XM offer on line trials that I would suggest anyone try. These trials give you a chance to experience the content offerings of the service right over your computer. My advice is try the on line version, but to also talk to someone you know who has the service. You can try Sirius on line by clicking here. You can try XM on line by clicking here. Exclusive New Sirius Unit Artist Concept
April 13, 2006 Satellite Standard Group along with our content partner GetSiriusInfo.com, have been working with sources who have seen the early versions of the unit, to present 2 artist concepts of the new SIRIUS Sportster unit aka the SPTK4. Some sources also report that there will be a SPTK3 that will be an entry level unit, and the SPTK4 will be (an upgraded unit). We have taken information from numerous sources, including someone who was at the “top secret, closed door event” SIRIUS held at CES for top retailers. We have taken the information and developed these two concept units. GSI was first to report on this unit back in January. We have been updating this story over the past few weeks, now we are happy to present this artist concept based on the information we have been able to gather. We want to stress that this artwork has been composed by GSI: GetSirius Info and SSG: Satellite Standard Group, and is not a photo of the actual unit, it is a manipulated image to present this info to our readers.

RFMI Files 10-Q Report
April 13, 2006 Last Weekend Satellite Standard Group (SSG) did a profile piece on RF Monolithics, a company that supplies filters to Sirius Satellite Radio as well as XM Satellite Radio. The SSG profile pointed out the relationship between RFM and the satellite radio services, as well as the diverse base of other industries that RFM is involved in. SSG outlined RFM as a potential derivative investment opportunity for those invested in Satellite Radio. Toady RFM filed their SEC Form 10-Q. This is a quarterly report and represents the quarter that ended for RFM on February 28, 2006. The report is very detailed and offers color on each component of the RFM business, and shows guidance of a 20% increase in Year over Year sales growth. You can view the SEC filing by visiting the RFM website here. The report does have a section where satellite radio is discussed. Excerpts from the report include: “We provide filters for Sirius satellite radio Inc., and XM Satellite Radio Holdings, Inc. and we are working with them on future generations of product. We expect sales for the satellite radio application will continue to increase as subscriptions for these services continue to increase. We have seen growth in both automotive and general consumer applications for satellite radio service develop. The consumer portion of satellite radio is characterized by very short lead times as the firms manufacturing radios wait for orders from retail before placing orders for components. As a result forecasting is very difficult.”
“The market for satellite radio filters appears to be more price competitive than we have seen for some of the markets we serve. As a result, we reduced prices to maintain our market position, which partially offset the impact of an increase in the number of units sold. The decrease in average selling price in the current quarter was small in comparison to prior periods, at 2% when compared to the prior comparable period and nearly the same as the previous quarter. This price change was moderate due to our introduction of a new generation of filters that have not yet entered volume production. We anticipate sales at lower prices as later generations of satellite radio products begin to ship in greater volume. We expect the trend in the number of units sold to more than offset the trend for lower than average selling prices, resulting in a general trend of increased filter sales for at least the immediate future.”There are some important items of interest here for satellite radio investors to digest: 1. Clearly satellite radio production is ramping up. 2. Clearly Sirius and XM are working to keep hardware costs down. 3. Clearly there is a new generation of filter getting ready to hit the market. 4. Clearly companies such as RFM are doing a lot of R&D into meeting the needs of Sirius and XM. Satellite Standard Group is not a financial advisor. Martha and K-Mart Up In The Air???
Aprril 13, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) came across this article about Martha Stewart from AdAge.com. As many are aware, Martha has a stream on Sirius Satellite Radio, and has recently announced plans to launch her new line at Macy’s. You can read about that in a pervious SSG article here. In the article it appears that Martha’s deal with K-Mart may be up in the air. Excerts from the AdAge article include: Speaking to reporters at Sears' annual meeting in a Chicago suburb, Mr. Lampert didn't exactly say Ms. Stewart's days at Kmart were numbered but called her contract, which lasts another four years, "not that great," mainly because of fees tied to high minimum sales targets. "We've tried to have a bigger relationship with them, and we haven't been successful," Mr. Lampert told The Chicago Tribune. "Maybe they don't like us anymore.” "If we thought it was in our best interest to put Martha Stewart in Sears stores, which contractually we have the right to do, we would do it," Mr. Lampert told reporters. "If we put a product into Sears, we don't want to have to pull it out in a year, or two years, or three years. We don't want to do that only to have it yanked away."The link to this write up is http://tinyurl.com/mf7gw4/13/2006 03:43:00 PM

Sirius and EMI Reach Agreement
  April 13, 2006 From Forbes.com
Sirius Satellite Radio has reached an agreement with music label EMI Music Group over a controversial portable radio player that doubles as an MP3 player. The deal, which will allow Sirius to market its S50 device without fear of a pitched legal battle, follows pacts Sirius made with the three other major music labels last month. Music executives had argued that Sirius' player, which allows users to record up to 50 hours of music without paying any additional fees, violated earlier agreements they had signed with the satellite service. The labels had previously threatened to head to court to prevent Sirius from selling the device. But last month Warner Music Group (nyse: WMG - news - people ), Vivendi Universal's (nyse: V - news - people ) Universal Music Group and Sony-BMG, a joint-venture of Sony (nyse: SNE - news - people ) and Bertelsmann, all settled with the satellite service. Those deals reportedly call for Sirius to pay the labels a fee for each device sold, and cap the number of gadgets that Sirius will sell. Sirius is marketing the player for $330. Neither EMI nor Sirius representatives would comment on the specifics of their pact. "Sirius and EMI Music North America have resolved the issues specifically related to the S50," EMI spokeswoman Jeanne Meyer said in a statement. "Moving forward, the two companies are open to discussions to resolve issues relating to future products." Sirius and competitor XM Satellite Radio (nasdaq: XMSR - news - people ) still have yet to resolve another dispute with the music industry, this one concerning how much the satellite services should pay music owners for the right to broadcast their tunes. An existing agreement between the satellite operators and the music business expires at the end of this year. Sirius chief executive Mel Karmazin, whose service has 4 million subscribers, told an investor conference this week that if music labels wanted to increase the rates they charge satellite companies for their offerings, then they should stop offering conventional broadcasters their music free of charge. 4/13/2006 01:22:00 PM

Tax time Is Here
April 13, 2006 Tax Day is coming, and Satellite Standard Group (SSG) wants to give you a little information that you may find helpful. We interviewed a local CPA who was kind enough to give us a few minutes of time and tell us a few basic items that investors should be aware of. SSG – Many out there may be new to the stock market and afraid to ask questions. We want to help them out a bit by asking some basic questions that some folks may find helpful. Can you please tell us what a Short Term Capital Gain is? TCOCPA – Sure. Short Term Capital Gains are tied to a specific time period, and have specific tax implications. Short Term Capital Gains are gains made on sales of an asset that you held for less than one year. These types of gains are considered ordinary income and are taxed at your regular tax rate. SSG – That sounds simple enough. What is a Long Term Capital Gain? TCOCPA – A Long Term Capital Gain is a gain on an asset that you held for over one year. These gains are taxed at 15% if you are above the 15% tax bracket and at 5% if you are below the 15% tax bracket. SSG – So selling something at 11 months and 29 days could have major tax implications. Is that correct? TCOCPA – Yes. If you could be fairly sure that you can get the same price a couple of days later, you may consider holding onto the asset until it qualifies as a long term capital gain. SSG – What does my accountant need from me to do my taxes? TCOCPA – Your accountant will need all of your income information, and in the case of stocks, will need the 1099’s that your broker should send you. A good broker will also include your cost basis in the equity that you sold, but this information is not on the 1099. It is important to know your cost basis. SSG – What do you mean by cost basis? TCOCPA – Your cost basis is the price you paid for a stock plus any commissions related to the purchase or sale of the stock. This figure is subtracted from the proceeds of the sale to determine the amount of the capital gain. SSG – What about options? TCOCPA – Often times options transactions are not reported by the brokerage to the IRS. It is the responsibility of the taxpayer to track and report options related gains or losses. SSG – Thank you for taking a few minutes to help out. TCOCPA - You’re welcome Satellite Standard Group is not a Financial Advisor. Mel stated that the projected SAC for 2006 is $110, and that customer pre-pays are greater than the SAC cost. All in all the conference went well. As expected, there was no real new information, but perhaps the most important aspect of the speech was the reiteration of key metrics. SSG Exclusive Interview with Chip Harrison
April 12, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) caught up with Chip Harrison, Professional Angler, and the man behind the Sirius Satellite Radio wrapped boat seen at FLW Outdoor Tour events. SSG is pleased to announce that we will be conducting interviews with Chip after each tournament event, so be sure to check back for an inside look at Chip Harrison’s season. SSG – Chip, how long have you been sponsored by Sirius? C.H. – We signed on in February, got the boat wrapped, and launched in March. I’m excited about it, and the wrapped boat looks great. It even has the “Dog Star” logo. SSG – How long have you been fishing as a career? C.H. – Well, I have been fishing for a long time, but as my career it has been about 14 years. SSG – Fishing as a career has a couple of components, tournament winnings and sponsors. Who are your sponsors? C.H. – Sponsors are a very important part. My sponsors are (links to sponsors):Setyr RodsRanger BoatsYamaha OutboardsSolar Bats SunglassesMoore BoatsMinn-Kota Trolling MotorsMizmo Luresand of course Sirius Satellite Radio. SSG – For those new to the fishing experience, how exactly does a tournament work? C.H. – Well, you have a professional and a co-angler. It is almost like two tournaments wrapped into one. Co-anglers are determined by a random draw, and assigned to a professional. The professional makes all decisions on the boat, and determines where to fish and whatnot. After 2 days of fishing, the top 10 professionals and the top 10 co-anglers move on in the tournament. The co-anglers fish for one more day, and the professionals for two more days. SSG – You are part of the FLW Tour, what other events do you participate in? C.H. – I also fish in the FLW SeriesSSG – When is your next event? C.H. – The next event is an FLW Series event and is going to at Lake Cumberland in Somerset Kentucky on May 3rd…. From there we have an FLW Tour event at Kentucky Lake in Benton Kentucky on May 10th. SSG – So, do you ever sneak a listen to Sirius while out on the lake? C.H. – [laughs] Well, it is serious business out there. Actually we are going to install a unit on the boat. There are times where you do like to listen to radio out there though.
SSG – What Sirius Unit do you have in the car? C.H. – I have the Starmate Replay and it is always on. SSG – What of music do you like to listen to on Sirius? C.H. – Well, I am a rock music guy. I like Octane, Classic Rewind, Classic Vinyl, Hair Nation and that type of music. There is a lot to listen to. SSG – Any favorite talk programs? C.H. – I love Howard Stern. In fact, my radio is on Howard 101 right now. I think that Sirius has the best variety and selection available. The sports package is great. SSG – Chip, thank you for taking the time to speak with us, and we will catch up with you after the Lake Cumberland event. C.H. – Thanks….looking forward to it.

The Stern Effect
April 11, 2006 The term “The Stern Effect” was coined somewhere along the line amongst the internet posting community, and seems to be a buzz word used by supports as well as detractors of Sirius Satellite Radio. We have seen terms like “watch the sub numbers due to the Stern Effect” and “The Stern Effect is over.” Well SSG thought it was time to take a look into the Stern Effect and some of the components that surround it. Howard Stern did bring a large number of instant subscribers to Sirius. This influx of subscribers was expected by everyone, but is that the end of The Stern Effect???? Not Really. The Stern effect is about Advertisers, Advertising, and Advertising Revenue. Howard Stern has had many companies that have participated in his show through advertisement. Those are now clients of Sirius. In fact, many advertisers that get air time on Sterns 48 hours worth of programming per day also buy ads on other Sirius Streams. The Stern Effect is about Brand Awareness. The very fact that Howard Stern was coming to Sirius raised consumer awareness of Sirius substantially. This effect does not disappear. In fact, it grows. The Stern effect is about Friends and Family. All of those “instant” subscribers are going to be word-of-mouth marketing for Sirius. This “free” marketing campaign is something that Sirius will benefit greatly from. The Stern effect is about News. Stern is constantly promoting endeavors such as the Howard Stern Film Festival which debuts later this month. The Stern Effect is about Recurring Subscriber Revenue. Subscribers who came to Sirius for Stern are quickly seeing the value in the whole service. These subscribers are likely to be long time subscribers that will continue to keep the service. The Stern Effect is about Growing his brand, and thus Sirius into markets where he was not available on Terrestrial Radio. Large segments of the country did not get the Howard Stern show in the past. Now his show is everywhere. These are previously untapped markets for Stern. In simple terms, The Stern Effect is many things, but it is far from being over. SSG Exclusive Interview with Maryanne From Brooklyn
April 10, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) likes to deliver a mix of information that we hope you find informative and entertaining. We will make efforts to present interviews with people that are intersting to the world of satellite radio. Today SSG did a "lighter piece" with an exclusive interview with Maryanne From Brooklyn. Maryanne From Brooklyn is a well known name to those that listen to the Howard Stern Show. The 47 year old mother and wife is a regular caller, and is a HUGE fan of all things Howard. SSG took a few minutes to speak with Maryanne, and even got some information that many out there may not be aware of. SSG – Maryanne, many people have had a chance to hear you on the show, but may not know the real Maryanne. Who is the real Maryanne? Maryanne – The Maryanne you hear on the Howard Stern show is exactly who I am. I am a mother of two kids (22 and 13), a wife and have a dog named Max who is 2. The Howard Stern Show is my entertainment that keeps my days and nights entertaining. I love being able to hear Howard all the time….and that On Demand Channel it’s awesome. It ties the whole show together….like it puts all of the pieces of the puzzle together. You get to see what people look like, their facial expressions and their reactions…..You gotta get it. SSG - What does your family think about your role on the Howard Stern Show? Maryanne – My family is very supportive of everything I do, and I am very supportive of my family. That is what it is all about. They know I love Howard and the show. SSG – We understand that you have some entries in the Howard Stern film Festival. What are they? Maryanne – I did four films but have only submitted three. I am thinking about walking the fourth one down there tomorrow. The first move is called Bananacide and is dedicated to Robin’s revelation about the fruits and vegetables. The second film is called Eric Eats and is about High Pitch Eric eating. The third is called Judge Maryanne and is me as a judge. You’ll have to see them. Oh, I also have a small part in another entry that was submitted by someone else, but you have to wait till the festival for it. SSG – So you acted in the third film? Maryanne – Yes, I acted in that one. I also acted in a film a couple of years ago, but it has not been released. They brought me into the film for my voice. The film is called Toy and Tina’s Wedding…..It’s was at the Tribeca film festival, but has not been picked up by anyone yet. Joey McIntyre and that girl from That 70’s show Mila Kunis are in it. SSG – What do you think of Howard’s Show now that it moved to Sirius? Maryanne – I love the show. I think people were nervous that it would be to overboard, but it is nothing like that. It has times where it is overboard and times where it is simply goofy stuff that anyone can laugh about. They can now talk “off the top of their heads” which I like. I mean really, how often are you going to get to hear Blue Iris riding the Sybian? The show is just awesome. SSG – What is you favorite Stern moment? Maryanne – That would be March 21st 2000 when I first met Howard. He couldn’t have been more nice. I went to the studio on a whim….that’s how I usually go there, on a whim….and they let me right in. It was great. SSG – What do you like to do with your casual time? Maryanne – I love the beach. I can go to the beach all of the time. I went to Hawaii once, and that was awesome. I would love to go back there again some day. Outside the show I like bicycling, gardening, and of course spending time with my family….thats what is most important….family. SSG – What is your favorite music channel on Sirius? Maryanne – I love the Elvis channel. It is awesome. I also have been listening to the Reggae Rhythms with Bob Marley’s music and stuff. I also listen to other stuff like Jay Thomas, but really my radio is almost always on Howard 100 or Howard 101. SSG – What Sirius receiver do you have? Maryanne – I have the Streamer Replay with boombox and love it. I listen to Sirius in the car and in the house. My husband hooked up the Sirius in my car. SSG – What would you consider you biggest accomplishment? Maryanne – I think that I am a caring and wonderful person with two great kids and a wonderful husband. My family is my greatest accomplishment.SSG – Any other inside items you would be willing to share? Maryanne – I will tell you something that no one really knows. I have a tattoo on my left ankle. It’s a puzzle piece. SSG – What does the tattoo represent? Maryanne – It’s that piece of the puzzle that never fits in but completes the picture. I am thinking about getting the Howard Fist tattoo, but I’m not sure yet.SSG – Maryanne, thanks for taking the time to speak with me. Maryanne – Thank You. Talk to you again soon. The link to this write up is http://tinyurl.com/lhm7p4/10/2006 09:45:00 PM

A-La-Carte Programming???
April 10, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) likes to keep up to speed with many issues that that are directly and indirectly involved with the satellite radio sector. Today we are taking a cursory look at A-La-Carte programming, a current hot point with the FCC and the television industry. Investors and consumers of satellite radio should pay careful attention to this issue. At this point it centers around television, but should it become a mandate, could satellite radio be far behind? In a nutshell, A-La-Carte means that the television providers (cable and satellite television) could potentially be forced into letting consumers pick and choose the programming content that gets delivered to their home. For example, if a consumer decided that they did not want Nickelodeon, they would not have to get it, nor would they have to pay for it. The concept seems simple……give the consumers only what they want, and charge them on a per-channel basis. There are however interesting issues that argue against the a-la-carte format. Cable and satellite television providers State that the current format of package deals enables them to deliver a wide variety of programming at a reasonable price, and that the more profitable programming paves the way for the niche programming that many people enjoy. A potential victim of a-la-carte programming could well be the consumer that the FCC is, in theory, trying to protect. Because each channel would basically need to be self supporting to be viable, channels will be committing substantial dollars to marketing and promoting their brand rather than budgeting that money to new and innovative content. A-La-Carte programming would bring about “survival of the fittest”, bit is the programming of the fittest what consumers want to be limited to? If we step back and apply this logic to satellite radio, it could get a bit scary. One of the major draws of satellite radio is the commercial free music and variety of music available. With an a-la-carte concept, many current streams would find it difficult to continue operations. The basic business concept of satellite radio is that the subscription fees and advertising revenue of non-music channels finances the programming offerings. A prime example of this can be seen with Sirius Satellite Radio and their deal with Howard Stern. Like him or not, Stern does bring in subscribers, and does bring in advertising revenue. At some point, the subscription revenue and advertising dollars will help pay for the other content offerings of Sirius. Changing that model could be a drastic move for both Sirius and XM. You can see that there is a potential issue down the road for satellite radio. It begins to hit closer to home when you consider the intended future offerings of Sirius and XM in the video and cell phone arena. Perhaps the next time are listening to the news, and hear about this A-La-Carte issue, you may step back and think about not only the current impacts to the television industry, but also the potential future impact to satellite radio. Device Competition or Direction of SDARS
April 10, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) has been digging around in the electronics world to get a glimpse of what is out there in terms of consumer electronics. We came upon this product called the NexView NV-100. This slick device has some interesting concepts that are sure to catch the eye and ear of consumers. The only missing component at this point is satellite radio. Is a device like this that is incorporated with SDARS far behind? The NV-100 sales pitch: Imagine.....One device gets you to your destination quickly and safely. Once you arrive it provides the entertainment.....movies, music, photos, files......all at your fingertips in one, easy to use, portable format. Introducing the NexView NV-100 GPS Navigation Media Device.Featuring:- Turn by turn navigation with voice direction
- Pre-Loaded navigation maps with premium POI's
- Automatic re-routing with 3D view
- Large wide touch screen LCD display
- Internal 20GB hard drive for data storage
- Store up to 50 hours of video and up to 5,000 songs
- Play the audio portion of stored data through your vehicles stereo system with a built-in FM transmitter
- uses the industry leading Windows CE 4.2 Operating System
- Full range of FM radio stations
Sirius Satellite Radio, as well as rival XM, both have the capability to deliver navigational services, and even "predictable traffic". Both services could move towards a device similar to this at some point in the near future. Imagine the NV-100 with the added benefit of the best radio content around (SDARS), as well as a whole menu of data services such as movie times restaurant menus, etc. Devices similar to this may be what we are looking at in the coming 12 to 18 months from the pair of satellite radio providers. One added item that Sirius and/or XM should consider is putting a digital camera function with such a unit as well. While we are at it, a bluetooth antenna wouldn't be bad either. New Sirius Hardware
April 9, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG), and other informative sites such as Get Sirius Info, Orbitcast and Sirius Backstage, have been trying to find out as much information as we can about the new Sirius hardware, and when it will be released. Speculation is high, and rumors are beginning to fly. Here is what we hear at SSG understand at this point: 1. The Sirius Boomcube for the Starmate Replay will be widely available in short order. The Sirius Store is taking preorders for this item now. 2. The wearable kit from XACT, called the PowerPod II, is supposed to be released quite soon. It is the understanding of SSG that this wearable kit will work with the Starmate Replay and its sister units. 3. The Executive Docking Station for the S50 will be available in short order. The Sirius Store is now taking pre-orders for this item as well. 4. The new Sportster, rumored to be released sometime in May, is supposed to be a very impressive unit. It is our understanding that this unit is a horizontal plug n play unit that seems like a cross between an S50 and a Sportster Replay. Picture a unit that has the same look as an S50, slightly wider, and slightly taller. Control buttons will go across the bottom, and a small knob (about ½ inch) is off to the right. The screen is 1" longer than the S50 Screen. Basically, this new unit will be somewhere between the S50 and the Sportster replay in size, will have the polished “glass front” look of the s50, and will function along the lines of the current plug-n-play devices. SSG has heard rumor that this unit may have a live wearable function, but we have been unable to confirm if this is the case, or if this function is brought about by an accessory that can be purchased separately. 5. SSG has also heard rumor about a new “mid-level” Sportster product. We can only assume that it is very similar, but does not have all of the features of the piece of hardware listed in item #4. 6. SSG and others have also heard speculation about a live wearable device (we call it the Bellagio) capable of MP3 storage, etc. Sirius has spoken of this unit, and the fact that it will have a buy button, although a partner for the buy button has not yet been announced. Rumors about a deal with Yahoo! made the rounds last week. This new unit is a “vertical” unit, and is rumored to be trimmed in silver. It is slightly wider than the S50, and supposedly has a bigger screen. The hardware partner for this unit has not been revealed, but speculation has arisen that Toshiba may be a hardware partner for the unit. SSG has also heard that Directed electronics may well be a distributor of this unit. 7. The XACT Navi has had some initial paperwork already filed with the FCC. Release dates for this unit are unknown, but one would imagine that the unit will be out this summer. The Navi is a navigation unit that is Sirius Ready through an accessory adapter. As reported here and at Get Sirius Info, the secrecy surrounding the new hardware line-up is higher than ever before. Sirius seems to have made a concerted effort to announce hardware much closer to actual release. SSG will be working with some others to try to develop a conceptual image of the new hardware, and will keep you up to speed with what is happening. FLW Outdoors and Sirius
April 8, 2006 Sirius Satellite radio and FLW Outdoors announced a partnership late last month. For those that are not aware, FLW Outdoors is an organization that deals primarily with fishing and fishing tournaments. As part of the deal, Sirius satellite radio became a sponsor of FLW events including the Wal-Mart tournaments. Such a sponsorship was well received for a few reasons: 1. Sirius has been trying to increase its exposure and thus market share at wal-Mart stores. A sponsorship such as this helps Sirius build their relationship with the worlds largest retailer. 2. FLW Outdoors has a very attentive and loyal base. Sirius, by identifying themselves with this base, is sure to win over new subscribers from the relationship. In fact, it appears as though Sirius is preparing to launch a talk show relating to the subject called FISHTALK. 3. FLW Outdoors has many sponsors. Sirius, by becoming involved in this endeavor, now has a natural “in” with those sponsors to advertise not only on the new Sirius show, but on other streams as well. 4. FLW is very, very good at promoting not only themselves, but their sponsors as well. Sirius is sure to benefit from this. This week the FLW Tour had an event in Beaver Lake Arkansas. The Sirius team, headed by Chip Harrison, finished 85th, missed the cut, and finished outside the money by 9 ounces. At the midway point of the tour, Harrison currently sits in 70th with winnings of $36,000. The next FLW Tour event is scheduled for Kentucky Lake on May 10, 2006 The link for this write up is http://tinyurl.com/mns3w4/08/2006 09:57:00 PM

SSG Takes a Look at RF Monolithics
April 7, 2007 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) likes to point out some of the companies that have relationships with the SDARS services, and do a small profile on them. These companies may present an investment opportunity that some may not have been aware of, or simply have not yet considered. If you believe in the Satellite Radio sector and concept, you should give consideration to the other companies that make satellite radio possible. If nothing else, it is good background information to keep you informed on satellite radio happenings. Today SSG take a closer look at RF Monolithics. RF Monolithics (symbol RFMI) was founded in 1979 and is headquartered in Dallas Texas. RFMI is a leading edge designer, developer, manufacturer and supplier of radio frequency wireless solutions. The President and CEO is David M. Kirk. The tie between RFM and satellite radio is that RFM is responsible for some of the components that wind up allowing fans of Sirius satellite Radio and XM satellite Radio to hear the diverse content offerings of the services. In RFM literature they point out some key components of why RFM wants to remain in this sector. 1. RFM develops multiple custom IF products for the satellite radio receiver market. 2. RFM filers represent state of the art SAW design and the desired filtering solutions for satellite radio receivers. 3. RFM filters are small and allow for the satellite radio receivers to reduce size while at the same time employing superior electrical characteristics. 4. RFM is a supplier to both Sirius and XM, and is working with OEM partners of both companies to develop state of the art components for the satellite radio aspect of the OEM lines. TIVO for Terrestrial Radio?
April 7, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) has been informed of a new service called Snaptune. Snaptune Inc. has its sights set on becoming the “TIVO” for terrestrial radio. At this time there is no indication that Snaptune has their sights set on the satellite radio services offered by Sirius and XM, nor is there any indication that their product is capable of working with either service. There have been companies in the past that have developed products for Sirius and XM, but with the advent of the current and soon to be released hardware, these services can quickly become antiquated. The concept is relatively simple for a computer minded person to use, but still is not as simple as the “LOVE BUTTON” function offered on the Sirius S50. With the S50 a user can simply “LOVE” a song they are hearing, and the song is stored in their S50 for playback at any time. Users can organize playlists as well as add their own content. Both Sirius and XM will be offering new and even more capable hardware later this year that makes saving, buying, and dowloading songs a breeze. While downloading of songs is nothing new, the methods have become more simple, and the quality of the recordings much better. The RIAA as well as the record companies certainly have their hands full trying to figure out how to get their 2 cents out of all of this. Leslie Taylor of Adage.com does a detailed write-up about Snaptune Inc here. UPDATE: A company called Griffin Technologies (which is known for Mac and iPod accessories, such as the iTrip) also makes a device that has been around for over a year called a RadioShark. This unit can schedule FM Radio recording and saves in various formats on both Mac and PC via a USB connection (but cannot separate and identify individual tracks). Another Look at Advertising
April 7, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) has picked up on a developing story in the advertising world. Columnist JeremyMullman of Adage.com released a story relating to alcohol industry watchdog groups who are pressuring Anheuser-Busch after A-B announced a partnership to advertise on a major cell phone network. As many are aware, Sirius and Sprint already have a deal for selected Sirius music to be available on Sprint Cell phones. Additionally Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio have been planning and working on the capability to deliver video to their subscriber base. There may come a day when "watch dog" groups begin to pressure satellite radio carriers on what type of content is delivered over the devices. The landscape of media entertainment is evolving quickly and the line between FCC "controlled" content and non-FCC "controlled" content seems to be blurring. Currently satellite radio, because it is a subscription based service, is not saddled by regulations that apply to terrestrial radio. As satellite radio begins to deliver services through partnerships such as cell phone carriers, the issue of the types of content may arise. Sirius Advertisers Get Creative
April 7, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) has noticed some interesting advertising on Sirius Satellite Radio. Satellite radio is a subscription service and therefore is not beholden to censorship issues that are seen with terrestrial radio. This has already been illustrated in the content offerings available on both Sirius and XM. Satellite radio has now allowed advertisers to become more creative in finding ways to get their messages out to consumers. Sirius Satellite Radio has 100% commercial free music, but does advertise on other streams. XM has a few music streams programmed by Clear Channel Communications that carry commercials and their non-music content carry’s commercials as well. This morning on Sirius’ Howard Stern Show, one advertisement was very humorous, and something you would not typically hear on terrestrial radio. GoldenPalace.com, an online casino, advertised about the fact that a recent purchase by Golden Palace of the now deceased Grateful Dead singer Jerry Garcia’s old toilet has turned up stolen. Rather than simply write off the loss of the porcelain trophy, Golden palace has turned it into an ad campaign. Golden Palace encourages listeners to visit their site to get the whole story. Just as radio advertisers are transitioning from regionally targeted ads to a national platform for satellite radio, the creators of those ad campaigns are quickly realizing that their message does not have to be “watered down”, and their creative juices are beginning to flow. At this point advertising on satellite radio is limited, and not the bothersome 17-20 minute stretches of commercials that have become fairly standard on terrestrial radio. Fewer commercials (or in the case of Sirius 100% commercial free music) is already a bonus. Better and entertaining commercials may give listeners something to chuckle about, while at the same time get the advertising company’s attention the attention they are seeking in the first place. XM A Long Term Play
April 7, 2006 James Dix of Deutsche Bank sees XM Satellite Radio as a potential long term play. Dix cited a strong first quarter, and anticipated strong OEM installations in 2007 as major factors in his sentiment, and stated, "We continue to like XM (symbol XMSR) as a play on long-term satellite radio industry growth". On the OEM subject Dix also noted that Nissan and Hyundai will begin ramping OEM installation of XM in their model year 2007 vehicles, which should boost fourth-quarter OEM subscriber growth. We continue to see 2006 as a careful balance of growth and cost for XM, while awaiting the Japanese OEM cavalry in 2007." Dix has XMSR at a "Buy" with a price target of $33. Forbes.com on Bear Sterns Sirius Report
April 6, 2006 On the heels of new product releases by XM satellite radio, Forbes.com is reporting that Sirius Satellite Radio could snag the lead from rival XM with new products. Maya Roney wrote a piece about the subject today. The article is available here via Forbes.com Sirius satellite Radio has given very little detail about new products to be introduced this year. SSG fully expects some hot new products to hit the shelves, but the big question is when. Since taking the post as CEO, Mel Karmazin has held the new product cards close to the vest. Sirius has acknowledged that a live wearable device will be out this summer. Will Karmazin surprise consumers with a release in late spring? SSG has reviewed the Bear Stearns report issue by analyst Robert Peck. Peck states several items in the piece that include discussion about technology, the focus of Sirius to deliver enhanced technologies while evaluating each business decision with respect to Cash Flow Break Even, the new wearable, and the fact that Sirius coming off of 52 week lows could be an attractive investment opportunity. At this point who has the silicon advantage is unknown. XM’s new INNO device is in the hands of some who give it high marks ( see this story). The new Sirius live unit is still under tight wraps. Sirius and XM Cross 50 Day Moving Average
April 6, 2006 After both companies have seen 52 week lows over the past month, Sirius satellite radio and rival XM satellite Radio both made substantial share price jumps and both crossed their respective 50 Day Moving Averages. From a technical standpoint this is significant for both equities. The fact that they BOTH crossed the 50 day moving average is perhaps the more impressive event. For over two months the satellite radio equities have been trudging along in a downward direction. Sirius Satellite Radio:
The 50 day moving average was $5.29. Sirius went passed this milestone, and closed well above that figure on high volume. Sirius now sits right between support at $5.24 and resistance which is at about $5.61. XM Satellite Radio:
The 50 day moving average was $23.06. XM passed that price point and had a strong day closing well above that figure on nice volume. XM’s current support is at about $23.50 and resistance is at about $26.05 If both companies can maintain their recent gains, and those standing on the sidelines decide to get back in, the sector could see some nice upward movement. Another Look at Growth
April 6, 2006 Satellite Standard Group (SSG) received a request to discuss once again growth in satellite radio. An XMSR investor felt that a previous article titled Satellite Radio Grows - Sirius Benefits shed an unfavorable light on XM. The article dealt with year over year (YOY) growth in satellite radio, and illustrated that on a YOY basis that Sirius Satellite Radio has seen the majority of the growth. This is factual. Sirius has already received 93% of the YOY growth in the sector with the current subscriber announcements. When Sirius does issue their final numbers for the first quarter, that 93% will be over 95%. One has to consider though that the two companies are at differing phases in their growth. SSG did another article titled Subscriber Types and Growth about this subject as well. Year over year growth is a common metric used when companies are starting out. It demonstrates that the company is expanding quickly. There does come a point however when the YOY metric slows down. This is a natural process that happens as the base grows. This is where XM Satellite Radio is now. Last year (2005) XM got about 2.7 million NET subscribers. This year XM is projecting 3.0 million subscribers. This means that XM is projecting YOY growth this year of 11%. In the first quarter, XM’s YOY growth was roughly 11%. This puts them on a pace to achieve their goals for the year. There are some factors that need to be considered from last year. In the 2nd and 3rd quarter of 2005, XM benefited in the OEM channel from a very successful sales promotion introduced by GM. That sales promotion gave XM about 200,000 more OEM subscribers (total for both quarters) than they typically would have seen in those quarters. This factor presents a challenge for XM. They will need to see a strong ramp-up from some of their other OEM partners, or gain those subscribers in the retail channel. XM has maintained their guidance of 3.0 million subscribers in 2006. Some analysts have expressed that they feel this target is to aggressive, and are projecting lower subscriber tally’s for XM. SSG is of the opinion that XM can hit their goals of 3.0 million subscribers if they have a successful 2nd quarter, and get some additional non-GM volume from the OEM channel. Sirius will present more impressive YOY numbers simply based on where they are in their growth cycle. Currently Sirius has projected 2.7 million subscriber additions in 2006. Long term guidance for both companies shows a smaller year over year growth for 2007 and beyond. In closing, both XM and Sirius are growing nicely. SSG would like to thank you for your interest. Directed Electronics - A Sirius Partner
April 6, 2006 Many who come to this site are interested in satellite radio as not only a subscriber, but also as an investment. There are several components and partners that are involved in satellite radio that investors may want to take a look at. Today Satellite Standard Group (SSG) is taking a look at Directed Electronics (symbol DEIX). Directed Electronics is a well known partner of Sirius Satellite Radio, and is the distributor of some of the more well known Sirius Satellite Radio receivers such as the S50, the Sprortster Replay and the Starmate Replay. Directed Electronics went public in late 2005, and the stock price has been doing very well. In their Fourth Quarter conference call Directed stated a few interesting items: 1. Their NET sales increased 69% to $135.5 million in the fourth quarter and 60% to $304.6 million for 2005. 2. 2005 Security and Entertainment sales increased 19%. Satellite Radio sales increased 311%. 3. James Minarik, Directed’s President and CE stated, “Our growth was primarily driven by the continued momentum of our security and entertainment business and the strong growth of our SIRIUS satellite radio product sales. Specifically, our ongoing market leadership in security and convenience, led by our Viper, Python, and Clifford brands, as well as the expansion of our Definitive Technology home theater products, resulted in a 19% increase in our security and entertainment gross sales for the year." Minarik also expanded on the comment when he stated, "Fueled by strong consumer demand, our 2005 full year satellite radio gross sales experienced dramatic growth totaling $121 million, an increase of 311% compared with 2004," continued Mr. Minarik. "The year 2005 was truly an inflection point in the satellite radio industry. The combination of innovative product, compelling content, operational execution and our strategic relationship with SIRIUS Satellite Radio led to SIRIUS receivers achieving 61% retail market share in the fourth quarter of 2005 according to The NPD Group. As the primary supplier of SIRIUS branded receivers in the retail aftermarket, we expect to benefit from increasing consumer demand in 2006 and beyond." One reason investors may want to take a closer look at Directed is that they are involved in far more than satellite radio. Directed is also the company behind vehicle security components such as Viper and Clifford. Derivative investment plays such as Directed allow an investor to participate in the growth of satellite radio while having the advantage of investing in a company that is diversified into other businesses as well.

Subscriber Types and Growth
April 4, 2006
Satellite Radio has been in the business of gaining subscribers for a few years now. Because these companies have not yet been profitable, the concentration has been on simply boosting the subscriber numbers as much as possible while at the same time retaining as much revenue as possible.
The business of getting a subscriber has associated costs that are paid for up front. Sirius Satellite Radio and rival XM Satellite Radio then hope to hold onto these subscribers long enough to "pay back the up-front cost" and generate some profitability for the company. The revenue from a subscriber comes over time even when a subscriber pre-pays for a year of service. Generally Accepted Accounting Principals (GAAP) dictate that these companies book revenue over a time period that the service is delivered (see the financial statements from the respective companies for more detail).
Now that both companies are closing in on Cash Flow Break even, it is perhaps time to look at the subscribers more closely and understand where the growth is coming from. Sirius and XM do differ in how they count subscribers. Because of this SSG will identify which service is applicable.
Retail Subscriber (Sirius and XM)
A subscriber that comes from the retail channel, special markets, sales direct by Sirius. These subscribers tend to be the most "sticky"….meaning that they stay with the service the longest. Retail subscribers typically made a conscious decision to go out and purchase satellite radio.
OEM Subscriber (Sirius and XM)
These subscribers typically receive the service through a promotion because the car they are buying or leasing comes with a satellite radio installed. Because these subscribers have not necessarily asked for the service, the deactivation rate is higher than the retail channel. OEM promotions most often range between 3 months and 1 year.
Promotional Subscriber (XM only)
XM calls all subscribers in the OEM promotional period promotional subscribers. This is a sub-category of the OEM Subscriber category.
Rental Car Subscribers (Sirius and XM)
These satellite radios tie to rental cars. For an addition fee, the renting customer can get satellite radio. This segment of the subscription base is not very large, but does fluctuate depending on the size of the rental fleet.
Multi Subscription Subscribers / Family Plan Subscribers
These subscribers are additional radios that a current subscriber pays for. The monthly fee for additional receivers is $6.99 rather than the standard $12.95 price point. While these subscribers do bring in less revenue, they tend to be very loyal to the service, and the costs to gain them are minimal. XM also does some marketing promotions where they will offer discounted hardware if the consumer agrees to pre-pay for 6 months of service at the family plan rate. These subscribers can be a sub-category of both the Retail Subscriber or the OEM Subscriber category.
Data Services Subscriber (XM only)
XM breaks out this group who receive the on line feed only, or who get other add on data services. At this point this segment is very small in XM's subscriber base. These subscribers can be a subcategory of the Retail Subscriber category or the OEM subscriber category.
As SSG has discussed in previous write ups, the satellite radio sector is growing. The types of subscribers that represent this growth are very important. At this point XM has been actively marketing to and is gaining subscribers from the Multi Subscription and Family Plan category. These types of subscribers (1.1 million) make up about 19% of the XM subscriber base. This group of people represent people who already have the service, like it, and want additional receivers either for their own use, or for friends and family. Growth in this sector is good, but is limited by nature. It is our understanding that XM would like to get this category to about 25% to 30% of the subscriber base.
Sirius has been seeing growth primarily in two areas. The OEM channel and the Retail Channel. With Ford ramping up installs, the OEM numbers for Sirius have increased dramatically. Sirius has issued guidance that they anticipate over 825,000 NET subscribers in the OEM category in 2006. The substantial retail growth for Sirius is due to brand awareness, overall content, and the addition of Howard Stern to the Sirius line-up.
Sirius has not separated out the family plan numbers lately, but did mention the category at some point last year. At that time, the Family Plan type subscriber made up less than 10% of Sirius' subscriber base.
In the opinion of SSG, Sirius has more room to grow in the Family Plan type subscriber than does XM. If you consider that Sirius added nearly 2,000,000 subscriber in the past 6 months, and that most of these subscribers were First time subscribers, you can see the potential to grow that segment for Sirius. This does not even consider the existing subscriber base.
This really boils down to these companies being at slightly different points in their growth cycle, but with Sirius already grabbing between 90% and 95% of the new growth so far this year without having tapped into the friends and family potential, the story could become very interesting. Remember that before you can get a “Friends and Family” subscriber you need to get the “Primary” subscriber, and right now the primary subscriber category is being dominated by Sirius. Many have assumed that there has been a "Howard Stern Effect" with Sirius, and this certainly can not be denied. The real question is how long that effect lasts, and what happens to the market share pie when the initial impact of Stern dies down. You can be sure that there are many investors asking this very question. The link for this write up is: http://tinyurl.com/qa5kf Satellite Standard Group is not a financial advisor. Sirius Valuation
April 4, 2006 In an article published by Forbes.com analyst Robert Peck of Bear Stearns comments that current valuation of Sirius Satellite Radio, currently trading near 52 week lows, could have some upside potential. The key element that Peck notices revolves around one major factor. Will investors begin to look at Sirius’ execution in the path towards Cash Flow Break Even. Peck noted “Sirius’ “unflinching focus on achieving profitability…..” The entire article can be read HERE (Via Forbes). Satellite Standard Group (SSG) has noted that there has been a distinct shift in the conference calls by Sirius Satellite Radio. CEO Mel Karmazin often stresses the “laser like focus” he has when it comes to reaching Cash Flow Break Even and profitability. Karmazin also seems to stress the metrics that can illustrate that path. SSG sees the first quarter, and annual meeting reporting as key moments in 2006 for Sirius Satellite Radio. Analysts and investors alike will be looking at the financials and guidance of Sirius closely to see if that flicker at the end of the tunnel is indeed the light of Cash Flow Break Even. An important item to note is that Sirius has stated the possibility of CFBE in the fourth quarter of 2006. Included in that projection are capital expenditures which are currently budgeted at $110,000,000. This differs materially from the CFBE projection of Sirius’ competitor XM Satellite Radio, which is projecting Q4 CFBE but excludes capital expenditures from the formula. The sentiment in the sector has been going through some changes. In the past investors seemed to concentrate heavily on the subscriber numbers, subscriber growth, content deals and automobile deals. As potential CFBE nears, the investor focus seems to have shifted somewhat to the financial standing and profitability potential of Sirius and XM. In our opinion, the sector could see possible upside as evidence of CFBE and profitability becomes more clear. Auto Sales and Satellite Radio
Satellite radio is growing in the automotive word. The image to the left shows the sales figures for each auto manufacturer, their market share for the year to date, and their respective satellite radio partner. A few items are important to note: 1. This data represents OEM sales figures and not installations of satellite radios. 2. The realationships vary depending on the manufacturer. For example, Toyota and Nissan have a factory install program with XM and a port/dealer install program with Sirius. Thus they are categorized as "both". 3. Some manufactures have not ramped up satellite radio installions to the same extent as others. GM, Honda, DCX and Ford have more extensive installs. Satellite Radio Grows - Sirius Benefits
2006 has brought on a wave of new subscribers to Satellite Radio. It seems that satellite radio is now reaching not only front pages, thanks to Howard Stern, but also the dashboards of many automobiles. After the first quarter of 2005 satellite radio had announced addition of 846,577 new subscribers. XM had 541,140 and Sirius had 305,437. With the first quarter of 2006 now complete, a comparison to last year is valid and warranted. The only glitch is that Sirius has not yet publicized their first quarter subscriber additions. Sirius did announce that they had passed the 4,000,000 subscriber mark earlier this year. At the time that represented net subscriber addition of 683,440. This number already surpasses XM’s full quarter count, and Sirius had a minimum of an additional 2 weeks worth of subscribers to add to their tally. SSG is projecting Sirius to finish the quarter with between 858,440 and 933,440 subscribers. Using the low end of the SSG estimate, and the actual XM subscriber figure, the first quarter will have gained 1,426,440 net subscribers for satellite radio. This would represent sector growth of about 69% from last year. Year over year growth for the sector of 69% is quite impressive, but is not the REAL story here. The real story is which provider is benefiting from the growth in the sector. Using the assumptions listed above, the sector will have added 579,863 more subscribers this year than they did last year. Of that 579,863 subscribers, Sirius will have accounted for 552,140 of them. This means that Sirius has captured about 95% of the sector growth. Satellite Radio is growing nicely. Sirius Satellite radio is the biggest benefactor in that growth. Sirius Makes Market Share Gains
The first quarter is now complete and XM Satellite Radio has announced their Net subscriber additions for the first 3 months of 2006. XM added roughly 568,000 new subscribers and now boasts a subscriber base of over 6,500,000. Sirius Satellite radio has not yet released the final tally for subscriber addition, but was already ahead of XM for the quarter with their 4,000,000 a couple of weeks ago. Interestingly, Sirius did not disclose when they surpassed the 4,000,000 count. When Sirius made their announcement it represented NET additions of 683,440 subscribers with at least 2 more weeks left in the quarter SSG projects that Sirius likely closed the quarter with between 4,175,000 and 4,250,000 NET subscribers. If Sirius were to hit the high side of the SSG estimate of 4,250,000 subscribers, they will have an overall Satellite Radio market share of 40%. The number of subscribers for the quarter would be 933,440. The market share for the quarter would be 62% Sirius. No matter what Sirius winds up reporting, we already know that they will have a minimum of 38% of the overall satellite radio market share. Howard Stern Remarks Taken Out Of Context
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Howard Stern went into great detail about his transition to Sirius Satellite Radio. A small portion of the story was picked up by the Associated Press, and this is the point when the rumor mill began to circulate that Howard Stern was upset with his fans. The except that has generated all of the buzz is quoted below: “Does it bother you that most of your fans haven't followed you to Sirius?I was just at my psychiatrist and I said, ''I just got great news: We hit the 4 million mark. And I'm angry. It should be 20 million.'' It's insulting to me that everyone hasn't come with me. I take it personally. The competitive thing is a sickness that eats at me. I want to say to my audience in this article, ''F--- you! You haven't come with me yet? How dare you?'' [Laughs] ''We're up to wild, crazy stuff, the show has never sounded better. You cheap bastard!''” The interesting thing to note is that the “[Laughs] was not included in the A.P. story, and neither was the context of the conversation. The “[Laughs] insertion in the article enables the author to demonstrate the emotion and atmosphere in which the statement was made. The original author felt that this aspect was important. Why the Associated Press decided to edit it out is unknown, but the effects of that AP decision can now be seen on message boards throughout the net. Howard Stern discussed the subject on his morning show of April 3, 2006. Howard explained that the comments were tongue in cheek, and that the context was a discussion about how he is never satisfied and is always striving for perfection. Howard expressed that he loves the fans, and that he feels that his show on Sirius is very entertaining. This is clearly illustrated throughout the Entertainment Weekly piece.
