Dylan Finds Direction Home: On Top After 30 Years

With the once-infamous Rolling Stones tempering their saucy lyrics to appease Beijing puritans, it might seem that baby-boomer icons have become as quaint -- or irrelevant -- as vinyl records. Not necessarily. One titan of the 1960s has proven very current indeed: Bob Dylan, nasal troubadour of social protest, who's back on the charts. According to figures released Wednesday by Nielsen SoundScan, a unit of the media and entertainment audience-tracking company, Dylan is actually on top of the charts -- for the first time since the U.S. Bicentennial. The folk-rock legend's new disc, "Modern Times," soared to No. 1 on the album sales roster, selling 192,000 copies in its debut week on the shelves. (Good news for the album's Sony music label, too.) Firmly entrenched in the pantheon of American counter-culture, Dylan took a hit from so-called "purists" way back in 1965, when he released his first fully electric album, "Highway 61 Revisited." But stalwarts said this was merely an evolution, a mastering of new forms -- which he would continue to do, even after his ironically controversial religious awakening. And as pop-cultural waves of grunge, retro-Americana and Neo-Burlesque helped revive an interest in earthier, less glossy tune-smithing, new generations of fans and disciples came along to praise his grit and creativity.
