Sirius Makes Market Share Gains

The first quarter is now complete and XM Satellite Radio has announced their Net subscriber additions for the first 3 months of 2006. XM added roughly 568,000 new subscribers and now boasts a subscriber base of over 6,500,000.

Sirius Satellite radio has not yet released the final tally for subscriber addition, but was already ahead of XM for the quarter with their 4,000,000 a couple of weeks ago. Interestingly, Sirius did not disclose when they surpassed the 4,000,000 count. When Sirius made their announcement it represented NET additions of 683,440 subscribers with at least 2 more weeks left in the quarter

SSG projects that Sirius likely closed the quarter with between 4,175,000 and 4,250,000 NET subscribers.

If Sirius were to hit the high side of the SSG estimate of 4,250,000 subscribers, they will have an overall Satellite Radio market share of 40%. The number of subscribers for the quarter would be 933,440. The market share for the quarter would be 62% Sirius.

No matter what Sirius winds up reporting, we already know that they will have a minimum of 38% of the overall satellite radio market share.
