Howard Stern Remarks Taken Out Of Context
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Howard Stern went into great detail about his transition to Sirius Satellite Radio. A small portion of the story was picked up by the Associated Press, and this is the point when the rumor mill began to circulate that Howard Stern was upset with his fans.
The except that has generated all of the buzz is quoted below:
“Does it bother you that most of your fans haven't followed you to Sirius?I was just at my psychiatrist and I said, ''I just got great news: We hit the 4 million mark. And I'm angry. It should be 20 million.'' It's insulting to me that everyone hasn't come with me. I take it personally. The competitive thing is a sickness that eats at me. I want to say to my audience in this article, ''F--- you! You haven't come with me yet? How dare you?'' [Laughs] ''We're up to wild, crazy stuff, the show has never sounded better. You cheap bastard!''”
The interesting thing to note is that the “[Laughs] was not included in the A.P. story, and neither was the context of the conversation. The “[Laughs] insertion in the article enables the author to demonstrate the emotion and atmosphere in which the statement was made. The original author felt that this aspect was important. Why the Associated Press decided to edit it out is unknown, but the effects of that AP decision can now be seen on message boards throughout the net.
Howard Stern discussed the subject on his morning show of April 3, 2006. Howard explained that the comments were tongue in cheek, and that the context was a discussion about how he is never satisfied and is always striving for perfection. Howard expressed that he loves the fans, and that he feels that his show on Sirius is very entertaining. This is clearly illustrated throughout the Entertainment Weekly piece.
