Device Competition or Direction of SDARS

April 10, 2006

Satellite Standard Group (SSG) has been digging around in the electronics world to get a glimpse of what is out there in terms of consumer electronics. We came upon this product called the NexView NV-100.

This slick device has some interesting concepts that are sure to catch the eye and ear of consumers. The only missing component at this point is satellite radio. Is a device like this that is incorporated with SDARS far behind?

The NV-100 sales pitch:

Imagine.....One device gets you to your destination quickly and safely. Once you arrive it provides the entertainment.....movies, music, photos, files......all at your fingertips in one, easy to use, portable format. Introducing the NexView NV-100 GPS Navigation Media Device.

Featuring:
  • Turn by turn navigation with voice direction
  • Pre-Loaded navigation maps with premium POI's
  • Automatic re-routing with 3D view
  • Large wide touch screen LCD display
  • Internal 20GB hard drive for data storage
  • Store up to 50 hours of video and up to 5,000 songs
  • Play the audio portion of stored data through your vehicles stereo system with a built-in FM transmitter
  • uses the industry leading Windows CE 4.2 Operating System
  • Full range of FM radio stations

Sirius Satellite Radio, as well as rival XM, both have the capability to deliver navigational services, and even "predictable traffic". Both services could move towards a device similar to this at some point in the near future. Imagine the NV-100 with the added benefit of the best radio content around (SDARS), as well as a whole menu of data services such as movie times restaurant menus, etc. Devices similar to this may be what we are looking at in the coming 12 to 18 months from the pair of satellite radio providers. One added item that Sirius and/or XM should consider is putting a digital camera function with such a unit as well. While we are at it, a bluetooth antenna wouldn't be bad either.
