TIVO for Terrestrial Radio?

April 7, 2006

Satellite Standard Group (SSG) has been informed of a new service called Snaptune. Snaptune Inc. has its sights set on becoming the “TIVO” for terrestrial radio. At this time there is no indication that Snaptune has their sights set on the satellite radio services offered by Sirius and XM, nor is there any indication that their product is capable of working with either service. There have been companies in the past that have developed products for Sirius and XM, but with the advent of the current and soon to be released hardware, these services can quickly become antiquated.

The concept is relatively simple for a computer minded person to use, but still is not as simple as the “LOVE BUTTON” function offered on the Sirius S50. With the S50 a user can simply “LOVE” a song they are hearing, and the song is stored in their S50 for playback at any time. Users can organize playlists as well as add their own content. Both Sirius and XM will be offering new and even more capable hardware later this year that makes saving, buying, and dowloading songs a breeze.

While downloading of songs is nothing new, the methods have become more simple, and the quality of the recordings much better. The RIAA as well as the record companies certainly have their hands full trying to figure out how to get their 2 cents out of all of this.

Leslie Taylor of Adage.com does a detailed write-up about Snaptune Inc here.

UPDATE: A company called Griffin Technologies (which is known for Mac and iPod accessories, such as the iTrip) also makes a device that has been around for over a year called a RadioShark. This unit can schedule FM Radio recording and saves in various formats on both Mac and PC via a USB connection (but cannot separate and identify individual tracks). You can read more about this: Here.
