Bear Stearns - Retail More Encouraging

In a research mnote issued today, analyst Robert Peck of Bear Stearns spoke to the retail environment surrounding SDARS as the holiday season approaches.

· Retail Checks More Encouraging this Weekend. We visited several Best Buy and Circuit City stores in the tri-state area, as we do every weekend. As with previous weeks, we did not find a lot of consumer interest around the satellite radio kiosks. In one of the stores, thesalesperson stated that while sales had been tepid, they had seen a definite pick up in sales during the past two weeks after the Sirius Stiletto became available.
Currently, they were selling about 10 satellite radios a day, about level with last year, which is encouraging. We noticed that most of the stores had an adequate supply of the Stiletto now, even though the displays had not been set up yet as the stores are yet to deploy the "brackets" that would hold the Stilettos in the display units. Sirius maintained a commanding market share at the stores we visited
· This Week's Data Points. As we had stated previously in all of our previous 4 weekly notes on the subject, these are just the initial set of data points that could provide an insight into subscriber ramp during the upcoming holiday season. Interesting fifth week of tracking statistics: highest Amazon sales rank improved to 135 for the RoadyXT, lowest satellite radio remains at ~$30 (XM Sportscaster), and eBay listings for XM and Sirius increased again after the post-promotion dip last week. In itself, these starting data points may not mean much, but evaluating the trend over the next few weeks may be extremely powerful.
