Interesting strategy For Zune

November 12, 2006

Sunday morning came, and after breakfast I headed to the local store to pick up the Sunday paper. i like to grab the paper each week to follow what is happening in the electronics word, and what products are being marketed.

Of course, this sends me rigt to the Best Buy, Circuit City and Radio Shack ads. In those ads i find pretty much the typical flavor of satellite radio advertising. Sirius and XM each with ads concentrating on certain pieces of hardware, and pointing out some of the content that each service has to offer.

I also happen to look through the Toys R Us flyer. Having two little ones, and the holidays fast approaching give me plenty of reson to look. It also gives me an understanding of exactly what the kids are asking for. Well, in flipping through the Toys R Us flyer, I happened to pause and take note that the Microsoft Zune is being sold there. thats right, the $250.00 Zune is going to be available at Toys R Us. Zune proudly has a girl of about 13 holding up a Zune with a bright smile, and the tag line states "Get Zune Here First"

This got me thinking. This is a pretty smart marketing move by the guys at Microsoft. Get the pre-teens and teens wanting your system, and thus expose their parents directly to what zune has to offer. Additionally, flipping through the flyer revealed no I-Pods, or any other MP3 players. Talk about a captive audience!!!

As often happens, parents of kids rely on their kids to understand what is hot and what is not. There is likely not a X-Box system, Sony PSP2 system, or Nintendo system in America that does not have a dad who buys Madden Football, Saint Row, or Grand Theft Auto to veg out with.

Microsoft Zune seems to carry a virtual monopoly at Toys R Us. Parents of liitle ones can get their GI Joes, Transformers, Barbies, and a great new Music device all in one stop!! In fact, you can pre-order your Zune at Toys R Us beginning November 14th!!!

To date, neither satellite radio company has really targetted the under 18 crowd. In fact, to subscribe, you virtually need a credit card, and that would rule out many teens unless your zip code is 90210. This is where the I-Pods and Zunes of the world can carry a distint advantage over satellite radio, and this became crystal clear when I flipped through a Sunday newspaper flyer as i sat drinking my coffee.
