HD and Satellite Radio: Will Co-Exist Like Network & Cable TV

I have written that HD Radio is likely never to catch on. A recent conversation, however, with vice president of retail business development for iBiquity, the developer of HD Radio technology, Bernie Sapienza went a long way toward convincing me otherwise.
The conversation coincided with six vendor partners -- Audio Design Associates, Cambridge SoundWorks, Denon, Niles, Onkyo and Rotel -- announcing HD Radio-compatible products at CEDIA Expo. It was a sign of penetration, not only for into the custom installation industry but into the mainstream....

...There is a perception out there, said Sapienza, that HD Radio and satellite radio are pitted against one another. That's not the case because they can coexist and complement each other. "Radio will likely be the same as TV," he explained, adding that "you have basic cable service with new channels and new content being added all the time just like what's happening in radio with the rollout of HD Radio. If you want the option for pay channels with no limits on content -- like HBO, Showtime, etc. -- these are like XM and Sirius.
