Terrestrial Radio makes an effort to become "device based"

Think of the logistics...first you have to be listening to terrestrial radio on your computer, hear a song that you like, log onto iTunes, pay$0.99 for the song, download to your computer, then transfer that song to your iPod. Why not just go to iTunes, sample the song, and then download? Is Apple feeling the heat, too...?

Emmis Stations Roll Out iTunes Integration

Emmis has become the first radio company to integrate the iTunes Music Store into its stations' Web sites, unveiling the first two storefronts today. Listeners will be able to purchase songs from artists on the stations' playlists, as well as purchase songs handpicked by station talent and celebrity guests.

The first two stations to debut their iTunes integration are Alternative WKQX (Q101)/Chicago (at www.q101.com/itms) and CHR WNOU/Indianapolis (www.radionow931.com/itms). For example, listeners can check out Mancow's list of artists who've recently stopped by his studio, Q101 midday hostess Electra's favorite Ben Folds songs or WNOU night jock Nigel's playlist of "Songs To Get Drunk To." All Emmis stations will have their own iTunes stores by next month, with KROX/Austin, KDHT/Austin and KPNT/St. Louis the next to debut.

“We approached Apple with the idea, and we developed the back-end technology to make this possible,” said Rey Mena, VP of Emmis Interactive. “Many Web sites link to iTunes, but we’re the first to pull iTunes’ entire 2.5 million-song catalog into our sites, weaving station programming with the Apple platform.”
“This is another example of Emmis leading the way,” added Emmis Radio President Rick Cummings. “Radio has always been a promoter of music, but now our radio stations are also a point of purchase. This could take the industry in a new direction.”
Emmis began testing out the iTunes integration with WQHT (Hot 97)/New York and KPWR (Power 106)/Los Angeles last month. The company receives a portion of all sales made through their Web sites
