SSG Exclusive Interview With Doug Goodstein Of Howard TV
November 2, 2006
Sometimes we here at SSG get an opportunity to interview various people who are in some way connected to satellite radio. We try to ask more than the “standard questions”. Today we had the chance to catch up with Doug Goodstein of the Howard Stern Show. Doug is highly involved with the show, and gets to see justa about everything that happens.
Howard TV for a penny is launching soon, and the man behind it is Doug Goodstein. Readers can learn more about Howard's One Penny promotion
HERE. With that, here is our interview.
SSG
Doug, you are in charge of the television end of Howard’s show. Do you find some interviews, etc. harder to make "play well" on television?
DG
Not too often. If we feel an interview is not going to play well chances are that we might not air it on Howard TV.
SSG
In your career did you ever picture yourself doing a show like this, and how does it feel to be running a show that is in such high demand?
DG
My career actually started at ABC News on the network level; I was bored after a few years with limited creative opportunities and I never had a day that I came home and said “wow, that was fun”. I started looking for more entertainment-based jobs in NYC and was fortunate enough to get a job on E!’s Howard Stern Show. It was a perfect match for my personality and what I really wanted to do. I leave work now almost everyday saying “wow, that was fun”.
SSG3. You get to see a lot of behind\nthe scenes things such as meetings. Do the antics that happen on the show\nspill over into meetings?DGThe antics really never stop whether on the air or off the air everyone seems to always be screwing around with someone else. It’s very much a non-stop frat house mindset but also a crew that knows how to get the job done.SSGHave you ever caught something on\nfilm that you were uncomfortable putting on Howard TV?DGYes, but I am uncomfortable telling you.....even in writing! SSGItems in the Howard Stern Show cover a broad range of subjects. Has there ever been anything that you covered that simply turned your stomach, but you captured the footage anyway?DGYES, any and all of the puking segments really mess me up. Its hard to shake the image once you see it right in your face on 10 television monitors plus having to then go back and edit it all day. I also to this day have not looked without half my hand over my eyes at the ‘Hemorrhoid Contest’ show. "SSGIf you were on a boat with 1\nmember of the stern show for 1 month, who would you most like that person to\nbe? Who would you least like it to be?DGI probably would want to spend a month with Artie. I think Artie is a great person and someone that when I get to spend time with at lunch or hanging out always have a great time and conversation; I would just want to make sure he left the heroin at home! I would least like to spend a month with Richard because I would be afraid that he would try to rape me.SSGDo you have Sirius, and if so,\nwhat are your top 5 presets?DGI am addicted to Sirius. \n I listen online, at home, in the car and hopefully will soon get a\n portable Stiletto. My top 5 presets are Howard 100+101 (lets count\n that as one); Big 80’s; Sirius Disorder; The Pulse; and Hair Nation.SSGIf Eric The midget were to fly\nwith balloons, would use use two cameras to capture the event, or 3?DG
Are you kidding me!!! I would honestly have it as a 6-8 camera shoot. I would have at least 3 cameras rigged to him and the balloons plus coverage on the entire spectacle surrounding it.SSG
Any consideration to doing in Demand with Bubba the Love Sponge?
DG
The deal with In Demand is for Howard TV On Demand which does not include Bubba at the time the deal was made. You will get to see Bubba, Brent, and the rest of those characters on Howard TV when they come into the studio.
SSG
When Robin races Bubba, will you have them miced up? In car cameras?
DG
We will cover it all. In car cameras; of course they will be miced up plus we will probably have another 4-6 cameras covering the race. We will go all out!
SSG
What is your most memorable moment since beginning this venture? What moment would you rather forget?
DG
My most memorable moment was the ‘Shock The Puss (and balls) segment with Bubba shocking Richard and Sal. I was just sitting there saying what the hell are we doing and also say this is the funniest thing I have ever seen. It was the craziest most insane stunt at the time; I think there have since been other segments that have just been totally outrageous, shocking and compelling but that was the earliest most memorable moment.
I would rather forget Richard and Sal getting their temperature taken anally by Robin during the “Artie Roast”; the sight of those two whack jobs naked getting anally probed was just wrong, funny but wrong and an image I would like to forget.
SSG
Favorite whack packer?
DG
That’s tough one; so many are so good for so many different reasons but I would have to say right now that it’s Beetlejuice. You just never know what you are going to get and he is so unpredictable and almost always a homerun.
SSG
Most compelling guest/interview?
DG
I really enjoyed an older interview with Sylvester Stallone followed closely by Paul McCartney and Jim Carrey. Howard’s ability to get them comfortable and talking was like no other interview I have ever seen. It was an immediate new respect and pretty much as new introduction to them thanks to Howard’s interview. Stallone was the top one.
SSG
Doug, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. All the best to you.
DG
Thank You
