Remember Howard Stern? He's that guy who used to be on the radio. As everyone knows, that was before the Federal Communications Commission edged him off of the "public" airwaves and into the welcoming arms of Sirius satellite radio.
In my
first column for Wired News, I argued that Stern would have been better off using the internet, rather than Sirius' expensive satellites, to distribute his show. He wouldn't have made as much money -- right off the bat anyway -- but if his goal was to be heard by as many people as possible without FCC interference, a cached podcast and live stream would have been the better option.
An upcoming device that was
leaked in the Crutchfield catalog -- coupled with a recent announcement by Sirius -- indicate that the company is moving in exactly the direction I suggested: internet-based distribution....read more:
