Opie & Anthony Miss The Boat

May 16, 2007
Tyler Savery

Today I tuned in to terrestrial radio to catch the Opie & Anthony show. I wanted to see if this duo would perhaps demonstrate a moment of clarity and class. Sadly, this was not the case, and in my opinion Opie & Anthony missed an opportunity to try to set things straight.

What I was hoping to hear was a brief moment of sincerity and acknowledgement that certain comments (in particular those involving criminal behavior and violence) are better left unsaid, and that encouragement of such actions is not a line that should be crossed.

In my opinion, Opie & Anthony have now missed an opportunity to establish that they do indeed understand the ramifications of what they said. These two know full well that their fans are passionate and impressionable. They call their fans pests, and often comment on their activity. On certain occasions they call the “pests” into some course of action.

Do not be fooled, Opie & Anthony are well aware that there are many “pests” threatening to cancel XM service over this issue. The silence of Opie & Anthony is an endorsement of what is happening, and is a sad commentary on what these radio talents stand for. They had an opportunity today to calm the waters, and they chose not to do so. They have had an opportunity to offer a sincere statement on one of their web sites, and have chosen not to.

There is a time to step up to the plate and show some class. There is a time to set pride aside, and make efforts to make things right. It seems apparent that Opie & Anthony are not capable of such actions. I am a proponent of giving someone a second chance……but a third and a fourth chance are going above and beyond the call of duty.

It is sad that XM satellite Radio will now be victimized by a “Pest” campaign. It is sad that other on air talent will now have a cloud over what they say, and the subject of censorship will now be on the minds of many.

While the Opie & Anthony “Pests” may not appreciate these words, it is time that they demonstrate the class that opie & Anthony seem incapable of doing. Instead of cancelling your entire XM service, why not put your time and efforts into something that will have a better impact such as something helpful in your community. Defending free speech is noble……defending speech about violent sexual acts against women is classless.

I still wish that XM would have had another mechanism to discipline Opie & Anthony, but apparently they did not. It is unfortunate that XM seems to be suffering worse than Opie & Anthony, who are still on the air courtesy of CBS radio.

Position - Long XM, No Position CBS

  • Well put! Some how these two never concentrate on the "bigger" picture. Sterns "implosion theory" is still in effect today concerning them. Hey, Panero hired them and Mel may have to eventually deal with them. Just like the old days.............( maybe Mel is dealing with them right now?????)

  • Show class like Don Imus did? Where the hell did that get him? Classy apologies get you nowhere. Opie and Anthony are standing up for uncensored talk radio that their employer claims to provide. Regardless of how offensive it may be to some people, they should be allowed to say it without repurcussion. As Glenn Beck said on Monday night, "Turn the damn thing off" if you don't like it. I believe the Disney Channel on XM may have the class you desire.

  • See here's the problem...they were suspended FOR ADDRESSING THE SITUATION AFTER THEIR APOLOGY. To address it AGAIN, after they were told not to is to simply invite more trouble upon themselves. There was no "boat missed" when they were told to stay the fuck off of it

  • Did you ever think that Opie and Anthony were told not to comment on the situation. Most PESTS only have XM to listen to Opie and Anthony. If O&A are not on XM there isn't any reason for them to keep it. That is why they are cancelling. Get your facts straight before you spout your know it all comments.

  • A few responses to comments.

    1. Opie and Anthony did not address the situation after the apology....they made statements that called into question the sincerity of their apology.

    2. If O & A is the sole reason that pests have XM foir, they are missing out on some compelling content. Perhaps they should explore the dial a bit.

    3. One comment stated, "Regardless of how offensive it may be to some people, they should be allowed to say it without repurcussion. As Glenn Beck said on Monday night, "Turn the damn thing off" if you don't like it. I believe the Disney Channel on XM may have the class you desire." Clearly this person does not take exception to anything stated, no matter what it is. Perhaps they would feel differently if the subject of the rape comments was a wife or daughter. The point here is that condoneing such violence is not acceptabele......By the way, Disney has good programming, not my cup of tea, but it is good
