Shock Jocks JV & Elvis Fired By CBS

May 13, 2007
Tyler Savery

CBS radio has announced that JV & Elvis have been fired. The duo formerly worked mid-mornings for New York radio station WFNY. They landed themselves in hot water for a phone prank involving a Chinese restaurant that was laced with ethnic comments and sexual innuendo.

The phone call aired on April 5, 2007 just one day after Don Imus landed in hot water himself with comments about the Rutgers Women's Basketball team. Imus was suspended and ultimately fired for his comments. Adding fuel to the fire, the prank call was aired again after Imus was fired.

JV & Elvis were placed on suspension shortly thereafter, and Friday May 11, 2007, word began to spread that they were fired.

Surly the conduct of on air personalities has become a hot topic. Imus, JV & Elvis, Opie & Anthony, and Bubba The Love Sponge have all had critical comments launched at their respective on air antics.

Satellite radio was thought to be virtually immune to regulation, but the recent events have cast a spotlight on everyone. In the case of satellite radio, there is a lot more freedom to express, but recent events beg the question of whether or not there should be some sort of line drawn.

More so that the FCC, the advertisers seem to carry an abundance of weight when it comes to these issues, and perhaps, for satellite radio that will become a measuring stick. Regardless, this added spotlight is something that satellite radio would rather avoid as they are in pursuit of a merger. Popular sentiment is that the talent banished from terrestrial airwaves may wind up on satellite, but conventional wisdom would seem to indicate that these guys are simply to "hot" to handle at this point.

For those interested in hearing the JV & Elvis phone call, it is linked below. Please be aware that some may find it offensive. I feel it is worth listening to because it establishes the current landscape.
