Is Terrestrial Local Or Do They Just want You To Think So?

March 8, 2007

It is only a matter of time before the "local" argument for the NAB and terrestrial radio falls on its face.

They have avoided the subject thus far, and perhaps Sirius and XM are just giving them enough rope to hang themselves.

Last I looked, terrestrial radio still participates in something called SYNDICATION.

The concept is simple. A Radio station has a talented individual with a great show. The station contracts that individual, and then sells the broadcast rights of the show to other stations for air play. Is Imus available in 1 market? How about Rush? Sean Hannity? Jay Severin?

That is only one example of "local radio" station owners competing on a national scale. Bring in the internet and streaming of shows. Take a look at the web pages of the stations in various markets. Many of the stream their content over the net. Now think 2 years down the road, and where WIFI and WIMAX devices will be technologically. Your "Local Radio" will not be so local will it.

The fact is that "local radio" makes every effort to get to a national scale. There is nothing wrong with that, and personally I find it healthy to the marketplace. Where I take exception is when the NAB and these stations pretend otherwise to suit their needs of the moment.

  • ABC Radio Networks provides 24 hour programming services for over 700 radio stations around the USA.
Westwood One has a simular service.
There are several other programming services that provide 'local' programming to radio stations all over the country. Clear Channel voice tracks several hundred of it's own radio stations. A jock in one market will pre-record announcements for several other stations in various markets.
